Savage ending production of their ML

The following post was taken from the Savage shooters forum in which the individual states the Savage 10ML11 will no longer be produced. Has anyone heard this? To clarify, this is not me stating this, it is not my post.

I was talking to Henry Ball and he told me that Savage had informed him that production was going to stop this year. Considering how much he went thru to get a major manufacturer interested in smokeless muzzle loading in the first place I doubt we will see the ML II picked up by another company.
Henry owns the patents so no company can build a rifle like it or even largely similar unless he let them and they pay him.

I wonder if "Knight" might see this, if true, as an opportunity? Now, I know where there is an MLII sitting in a gun safe and he only shot it about 5 times and don't shoot it any more, and trades stuff. He's into BP cartridge. I need to get some "trade bait". Interesting times! 10

It is a very sad day indeed. I just got off of the phone with Henry and it is true. Production will cease at the end of
October 2010.Henry got the call fron Colburn 3 weeks ago letting him know.Sales had dropped off and the decision to cease production was born from our current econmic situation. Henry said he knew something was up when they failed to renew their contract back in Feb. He also said to let everyone know that he WILL continue to make custom smokeless guns in his shop.

Since Savage is quiting production I wonder how long they will replace barrels? Guys might have to go to PacNor for all drop in barrel replacement. Only time will tell. Mike

This is very sad. Savage went out on a limb by mast producing the first smokeless muzzleloader. The problem is that it was never fully accepted in the muzzleloader world. Other manufacturers deemed smokeless powder as dangerous. Our friend Toby made people believe it was a pipe bomb waiting to happen. I'm sure he is smiling now. Savage is a business and IMO cannot afford all this bad press against there company.

Whatever the reason Savage has, I for one just want to say a big Thank You to Savage for all the great years they did produce the Savage Muzzleloader. Savage made a great muzzleloader that everyone on this sight knows is 100% safe and stands behind there product even when we were not 100% safe. I will definitely buy another Savage rifle just because they take care of their customers.

it is sad to hear, but im sure fowlplay hit it when it was not really accepted even though people try it out of guns not designed for it. I am sure of one thin, and that is customer service on them will be excellent.

WOW is right!!
I always thought Savage had a niche market with the smokeless ML and a good following.
They are a top notch company though and I'm sure will stand behind their products I'm sure and offer parts support/warrantee.
Maybe they will bring it back?

I'm in pursuit of one more. Look for them on "CLEARANCE" and "DISCONTINUED" at the mass marketers and etc... If you know of some in a local smaller shop it'll be easy to negotiate a lower price as they are "discontinued". I would like to have a MLII in .45 with a long and heavy barrel for sabotless beanfield shooting. What does this mean for "Dougs"? I need the support and knowledge that flows here! I'm sur there is more to come. 10

Hard to believe ! My cousin and i waited and waited to get ours,nobody had them in stock!! I would think there is a demand for them. Like some one said the politics may have influenced there decision.Boy you would think ther is money to be made on these? Gunny

Boy, didn’t see that one coming.
Think I need to get a few extra breech plugs to have on hand for down the road.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the number of New Comers begins to diminish with the Savage discontinuation but this board is already on the up swing with 45’s becoming stronger with the passage of time. I imagine there will be more new-builds being assembled.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds here as smokeless muzzle loading is soundly anchored with many of us. Not that I have anything against black powder muzzle loading but just can’t see me going back to it after being spoiled with smokeless.

I sure hate to hear this news. I have 3 now, and not likely to need another very soon, but you never know when a part, or accessory, will be needed. In my opinion, instead of discontinuing, Savage should enlarge their product line. Broaden their design choices. Offer from 36 to 58 caliber, long range, carbine, squirrel rifle, etc.

In a way I am kind of not surprised. What I mean is that I never saw any marketing for the MLII. There are adds for Traditions/CVA, Thompson Center, and Knight before they went belly up. It is had to sell something that not many people know about.

Hopefully they do bring it back, and market it. It is a fine rifle and deserves no less.

8-)Well I guess you all know now I had to know something.

Though no part of the Savage system I've been hearing it from other sources for some time. So me expressing an un-confirmed rumor would have been irresponsible, not to mention possibly wrong, if they did the unexpected.

I have my opinion of why all this happened, but for now that will wait on another post.

thanks RB. I know we have some here that can get or have inside info and hopefully it will be released to us soon. after savage approves of its release. I am curios as to the reason why. I'm sure it doesnt have the quantity of sales thet others brands/manufacturers do.

Very sad. If the Savage truly gets discontinued, I hope smokeless-suitable components don't fade away (particularly high-pressure sabots!)

Also, there will be a lot less pressure on game departments to include language about smokeless in the game regs.

I also think this is sad; but remember, there are numerous sources of smokeless MLers. Many of us who have really gotten into this are not using stock 10-ML2s anyway. Some are not using any part of an ML-2. While I am very satisfied with my 10-ML2 based 40 cal and plan to stay with it for likely the rest of my hunting life, my NEF stock 50 cal SMI was(I bulged the barrel by a double load) was an excellent 300yd gun and I plan to have a very light weight 45 made by SMI within a year on this frame. Sabotless 40 and 45 shooting can give what the stock 10-ML2 could never do as well as saboted 45 shooting.
Life will go on.

This is a sad deal, especially for those who have been wanting
a 10MLII and for whatever reasons, have not been able to get
one.

Who on here was it that was inquiring/thinking about a build based
on a Savage bolt action? Did that ever come to fruition? Seems
like they were talking to PacNor about it.

Dave d. has done great jobs on smokeless ml's based on the
Rem 700 action.

There is a lot of knowledge on here about smokeless ML builds.
People just need to hear a lot more about it. Armed with the
correct knowledge, in addition to some patient shopping, safe,
efficient, powerful Smokeless Muzzleloaders of the quality (and
beyond) of the 10MLII could be had for very comparative
prices.

If, in the future, Colburn changes his mind and the 10MLII is
reintroduced, GREAT. But if not, as Steve said, life goes on.

I can't help wondering, though, if Colburn had advertised the
10MLII just 25% as much as the Encore 209x50, if sales
wouldn't be many times more than they have been? During
my last trip to the range, I met a 70 year old man practicing
with his Knight ML, and had been muzzleloading for 30 years.
He never knew there was such a thing as a smokeless ML and
he never knew Savage was in the ML business. Suppose he
has a LOT of company out there??

I've seen ads in hunting magazines for the ML-II, but it's always been a relatively small add, never the 1/2 or full page adds like T/C, CVA, etc, puts out. No TV commercials, either.

This sucks. My ML-II is awesome, but I guess I need to consider loading up on vent liners and getting a few more breech plugs as well (I'm sitting on one now). I think I'll also consider picking up a plastic stocked stainless model to have on hand as an extra in case my current barrel ever wears out. Then I can just drop the stainless barreled action into my thumbhole stock.

Randy is under an agreement with Savage. One the old Savage website, they linked to his for more information about Savage muzzle loading. If he is still under an agreement/contract with them, then he is limited in what he can say by it.
