Encore conversion I have been getting good results from the 45/70 conversion and have found the following while messing with setting the scope back with new rings after breaking one,,,,, 1- it likes a clean barrel, on the target board I circled all the 2 and 3 shot groups,, all of the smaller groups were the first 2 shots after cleaning the barrel well and shooting a couple of primers,,, it also cleans very easy, no cleaning or swabbing and the groups grow, all the three shot groups the first 2 shots after cleaning are the closest 2. 2-all loads on that target are 58 grains H4198, harv smooth blue, 200xtp, and fed mag 209.. The sabot petals while still attached were looking pretty stressed, they were twisted and stretched while the bases were fine, and they are pretty easy to load so I don't think I was stretching them that way,,, Taking a hint from others experiences I rolled a few 200xtps with a flat bastard crosscut file and it really put a nice small diamond pattern on the bullets, You can see the bullet and file on the link above ,, I only had time to shoot one shot that afternoon with a completely cold and very clean barrel, the next day I shot one more after swabbing the barrel well with dry patches,, same hole making an oval, and today I shot one more after again swabbing the barrel well with dry patches and it hit the same hole and a little low for a semi-cloverleaf,, the sabots also look better with the rolled bullets,,, the petals are not as stretched and twisted and you can see where the diamond pattern has slightly engaged them,,, they are also a little but not much harder to load, After 75 shots or so I’m liking this Encore more and more,,, need to shoot a few more at that same group and also include a couple barnes 195s,,,, the one hole circles low and to the left of the smaller group is the first shot fired with the scope reinstalled,,, was aiming a foot lower,,,,, I have been adjusting the scope alot and thats why all the small groups, and all these shots are at 80 yards,,, thats all the distance I have from my covered shooting bench/fish cleaning table.

cid-86f11e537cb9c8bf.photos.live.com/self.aspx/TC%20Encore%20SMI%20conversion/IMG%5E_1215.JPGThat link should take you there,,,the 200 XTP shots as well as the barnes actually a little better, but the barnes is no slouch either, I had removed my scope and replaced it and it was off a little to the right, used the first 2 shots to find that, other details on the image by knurling the bullets,, after a fouling shot I am getting up to 8-9 shots without the need to clean , I have shot a couple other really tight 5-7 shot groups that opened up after the barrel was too fouled,,,, all I am doing between shots is swabbing the bore well with a clean patch. all these shots were at 80 yards

After a month with no shooting,,, gezzzzzzz was driving me crazy,,,, I managed to get in some 200XTP and 58 grains 4198 shooting, from a fouled but dry swabbed barrel,,, first 3 made a nice little group just like shots 3,4,and5 in the above image, shot 3 more and the group opened up to 1.5 inches but I reloaded and shot the last 3 as fast as I could to be sure that a quick reload would be fine to shoot while hunting. It seems that it would be, all these shots were with a knurled 200 xtp,,, months ago I was getting 4-8 inch fliers when shooting a warm/hot barrel without knurling
My shooting range was shut down for several weeks due to a couple big oaks falling on the target,, and the neighbors being in from Florida,,,,,

Pposey, Don't kill that horse.lol. She's a shooter!!! I had just told a salesman at a gunshop about 45-70 conversion thats possible. I told them about the board and "As the lesson goes, You can take a horse to water ,but you can't make him drink." They knew it all. Our know it alls DO or know who does !!! Anyway, the 45-70 conversion seems to be a dang good way togo .45. Definitely softer on the wallet, but you, Slufoot and gang have shown me how to" KISS" and get great results. IMO with your gun liking it clean or semi-dirty/clean is a good thing you have good idea about your first shot . You're not shooting five shot groups at deer, lol. Great post and watch your witness mark, lol, Greenhorn

Yes watching the witness mark very carefully,, one thing I like about the break action on the Encore is that it is reallllyyy easy to look through the plug and check a load,,,, I do that alot!
I miss my savage some but have to admit for my purposes the Single shot action is a better way to go

PP, ..Nice stuff again. Do you have any idea what velocity you're running? I only tried a couple of 4198s and went back to 4759 in my conversion but with your post I'm gonna revisit 4198 and knurl the bullets. Guess I'll have to get used to the flamethrower effect my conversion has with the 4198 if it will put'em into the X with speed. Have you tried any sabotless in the conversion yet? Thanks for the posts. Best. 10 ga

I think I was averaging right above 2600fps,,, I'll check,,, and nope I have pretty much givin up on sabotless, the 40/45 sabot works so well as do the .40 bullets

PP, Nice shootin, I'm like you. I like my savage but my H&R conversion that Slufoot did shoots so good and at half the weight you hate to leave em home. The weght of a gun never used to bother me but age has dictated that lighter is better. I still shoot the 4759 at 43grs. only because of the short barrel. What length barrel on your encore?

I have to agree with pposey and olsmokey. I've still got my Savage but it never gets used anymore, my break action H&R shoots great and is so much nicer to carry while hunting. I've been thinking about selling the Savage so that someone else might enjoy it, instead of just letting it be a safe queen.
GOOD SHOOTING! Slufoot

Olsmokey,, My encore has a 26 inch 45/70 prohunter barrel, still shorter than my 21 inch savage ml2 was. My Ml2 was truely dear to my heart and I had had it for years,,, it was a very early ML2 but after getting the encore AND bulging the 45 pacnor I had on the savage I just was not into rebarreling, the Encore just carries and handles so much better in a singleshot situation which a ML is. The savage with a pacnor was for sure a better shooter, but the Conversion isn't a slouch either! I past my flat-top ML2 on to someone who wanted a build,,, hope it is serving them well.

I'll measure this evening and let ya know but it is a fluted sporter profile, I have not fired any 4759 through this one but have used a pound+ of H4189 at 56-58 grains,, have never had a hang or miss fire with F209M primers and i have the short SMI plug, most of my use of 4759 """"NOT 4579"""" was when my shoulder was mending and I had a 21 inch barrel and needed a faster powder, I ran 25-32 grains with no problems and reached 2100 fps with a 200xtp through a 21 inch barrel and a savage breach plug,,

PP, I was looking at your pictures. What kind of mount is that? Do the cross slots go all the way across? I haven't found one that does in a one piece for the Encore.

Kent25, mine is tight fit as well but no problem opening it, is this all the time or just when you have fired the gun?
Billy,, Im not sure what the mount is? it was on the gun when I got it, and I am not sure about the slots, it has an adjustment screw in the front that is made to screw down and push on the barrel I that helps any, I have never used that screw, not needed. I'll look at it and see what I can figure out.

nope they do not,,, they are a snug fit and are pushed in a little when you close the gun, have to have the tool or something to get an unfired one out

58 gr. of RL7 it only does it when shot i have sent it back to smi i could put a small o ring in primer hole then shot it and it worked great it would do it shooting primers only. think breach plug needs to be a few thousants longer
