dead on,I was just trying to blow a sabot with the new flat base.I did shoot 62gr just 2 shot to see if it would blow sabot.I only had like 3 or 4 64 gr made up.I would have shot that at 200 yrds.I was just seeing how much i could go before i blew sabot that why i skip 61 and 63 but fore final tuning i would not skip them. 64 gr no blown sabot

Way to go Marty! Thanks for the pictures.
If any of you had been following the other post started by TAR, you would have seen my message I sent to Ryan at Barnes. If you are not aware of the message, read TAR's post. Here is Ryan's reply:
These bullets are in plain cardboard boxes. Most dealers/distributors are not interested in keeping these types of products so they will only be available through our website. Like you said: We have to sell at full retail so we don’t compete with our dealers. Buying they from Mid-South may be the cheapest option. If you order with us and spend $100 or more, you can get free shipping to all 50 states. That can help to lower the end cost. All of our new .400 MZ bullets have the flat base that works in the smokeless muzzle loaders. We have both old and new lots on hand. I recommend calling and specifically asking for the new ones with the flat base (small radius). The large radius works fine in standard muzzleloaders. Once we are out of these, all new bullets will have this small radius. Thank you. 435-856-1105 Ryan Well, there you have it! So order 150 of them and you get free shipping ;D Richard

The .45 Pac Nor is a drop in replacement barrel for the Savage (or Remingtons). You can order it from Pac Nor for a little over $400. It comes chambered for the Savage breech plug. You just screw the factory barrel nut and barrel off and the Pac Nor on.

Thank you Sir tdillinger, Here is some more info on the 45 cal Pac Nor aftermarket barrel: dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=build&action=display&thread=3Many have went this route to reduce recoil, flatten trajectory, shoot .450-.452 dia resized bullets sabotless or because they may have had accuracy issues with their 50 cal. Or because they just wanted to have a new toy to play with. ;D You can also look in the Load Data sub-board at the top of the smokeless muzzleloading page for other info regarding some of the loads that are currently being shot in the 45.

Just another note on the Barnes bullets: I ordered 150 of them today for myself and Herman to try. $65/75 bullets with free shipping...................However , if you live in North Carolina or Utah, they bang you for SALES TAX. So the $130.00 for 150 bullets became $140 . Hopefully, in time, once the remaining plastic 24 packs are sold out, the new ones will have the Flat base bullets and, if Mid-South holds their price of $19.+ per package, us NC shooters can buy them somewhat cheaper from that source. Oh, the reason was the fact that Remington owns Barnes and they are now headquartered in NC........thus the sales tax. Richard

Marty..........I have actually had some pretty good groups with the ones I have. The load that blew the last one was not as hot as others I have shot so....... ? They are probably right on the edge of poking thru the sabots? I may still try to pick up some .40 cal. wads and seat them under the bullet inside the sabot and see what happens. I would hate to buy 1,000 of them and they don't work, but maybe I can hawk some off a local back powder shooter ;D Richard

After reading all reports on the flat base Barnes I got to looking at the base of the old style bullets. It seems the base is concaved which leaves the bullet making contact on just the outside edge of the sabot. This would make for increased pressure on the sabot in my book. If the new flat base bullets shoot better under increased pressure I would think this would be the reason. Here's a question for you who have the new designed bullets: Are the bases on these new bullets flat across the bottom or are they concaved like the old ones?.....I'm thinking the flat base is what will allow increased pressures by spreading out the area of contact instead of just around the edge...Anyhow, I ran ten of the old style Barnes bullets through my drill press and took the concave base out of them....They're now flat across the bottom and weigh 193.5 - 194gns. Next time to the range I'll jack the powder charge up and see how they hold up. Zen After posting this I re-read shooters initial post and it answers my question about whether the base is flat or concaved....Thanks shooter
