savage_barrels.com I ran across this sight. They are offering McGowan barrels for the ML'er II and Remington 700 conversions. I emailed them and after a couple back and forth discussions they said yes they can do the conversion. They advertise they have the best turn around time and according to thier prices they seem much lower than Pac-Nor. I just passed this FYI. Lou

I've used McGowen barrels in a few centerfire rifles in the past, accuracy right on par with the Shilens and Douglas I typically use.

They have 40 cal barrels too. Would these work for a muzzle loader?

They have 40 cal barrels too. Would these work for a muzzle loader? There are a few on the smokeless board using .408 Pac Nor barrels to shoot 40 cal bullets sabotless.

Did they fit the plug or do you have to have it done latter? I know that the guys that shoot the 40s love them. So they still can be had if some one wanted to a 40cal. Installing the BP is the only thing that might the hold you up.

Mmmm another option,,, so who will be the guinea pig? ? Well...............looking at my old old 50cal Savage this morning and trying to decide weather I need another ML,............... guess I already have it, sooooo it really wouldn't be "another one" now would it. If and when I do jump (I have no reservations on the barrel quality from these guys, more like what caliber and getting the needed time to wring it out) it won't be until late January.

Read this it is from their web site. This website was set up to provide owners of Savage rifles an outlet to purchase superior quality Savage replacement or drop-in barrels.
Order turn around time is as little as 1 week!
Our Savage barrels built by McGowen Precision Barrels are some of the most accurate barrels on the market today, with average groups of less than 1/2" MOA. Our accurate Savage barrels are built for the Savage bolt action rifles, whether they be repeating models or single shots. Our Savage barrels are available for the standard shank Savage, large shank Savage and the Savage Benchrest action.
All of the Savage barrels we supply are made to exacting standards. They are made only from certified steel that has been tested vigorously prior to doing any machine work on them. Once the steel has been tested and is found to be of the quality that McGowen Precision Barrels requires they are then precision drilled, reamed, honed, rifled, stress relieved and then each and every barrel is hand lapped to ensure uniformity and quality. The Savage barrels are then turned on centers to ensure no offset in the bore to outside dimensions. The threads on McGowen Precision Barrels Savage barrels are then machined using state-of-the-art precision CNC equipment to ensure that they are to benchrest tolerances. Once the Savage barrel is contoured to your specifications and threaded it is sent off to McGowen Precision Barrels gunsmithing department for chambering and crowning. All chambering is done using precision equipment to benchrest standards.
As the customer, you don't have to settle for "what's on the shelf" quality with Savage-Barrels. You are in control from the moment you place your order. You can choose any of the standard Savage contours from the Savage Sporter, Savage Magnum, Savage Varmint or the Savage Bull contours. The length is up to you. While we offer our standard pricing for 26", you can have a Savage barrel up to 32" in most cases. The crown is also up to you. You can choose from a Hunter Crown, Recessed Target Crown or the ever popular 11 degree target crown. And the finish is also up to you. Whether you choose a blued Savage barrel or Stainless Steel Savage barrel we'll leave that choice up to you. You can choose either a polished finish or a Matte finish. We can also steer you in the right direction if you'd like your Savage barrel coated.
The cartridge that you put your Savage barrel into is also your choice. McGowen Precision Barrels has teamed up with 4D Reamer Rentals and is now able to offer just about any cartridge you could desire.
If you desire a cartridge that is not listed in our cartridge list, we can in most cases get the chamber reamer. For cartridges not listed in our standard cartridge list it will incur an additional charge.
Unlike other companies offering Savage pre-fit or drop-in replacement barrels, we will take your desires and turn them into reality.
McGowen Precision Barrels are rapidly moving up the podium in regional and national shooting competitions. This just goes to show you that you don't have to purchase a name or reputation to be able to receive a barrel that will have you shooting groups that are far superior to any you have shot in the past.
A note about McGowen Precision Barrels. We realize that there may be some individuals out there that have had issues with the barrels they have received from McGowen Precision Barrels. We have spoken to McGowen and they have assured us that the "issues" have been addressed and remedied. We are so confident in the barrels that McGowen manufactures for us that we have requested that they put our company name on the barrels. We would not do this if we felt that there were some underlying issues with the quality of their products.

Anyone try one yet? I got an email back from them today and they said all I would have to do is supply them with a breech plug and they would do it no problem. McGowen SS barrel for a Rem 700 action would be $265ish plus $15 shipping.

They are doing one for me for the 700ml conversion, chrome moly as all my guns are Black Ice coated, I am sending them the bolt conversion, action, savage bp and are going to correctly headspace it for an additional 75 dollars, if I want fluting add 120.. Their turn around time is 2-4 weeks for all of this.
45cal barrel, 8 groove, 1:22 twist, 25inch, PacNor#7 contour, chrome molly, fluted. They will ship the completed to Black Ice after they are done with it and Lee will ship it back to me when he has coated it, it should be a looker when I get it mounted up to a stock.

I can't speak for the 45 cal barrels but. I've got two that are 358 bfg (wssm) and the one on the howa is a WOW barrel the one on the savage is minute of deer. I've got a SS 35 cal barrel for my 35 short coming and it should ship next week. I was told 6 week turn around and it looks like it's going to be 7 as they were cutting the threads yesterday and are going to bead it first part of the week. Because it was my 1st order and because I ONLY wanted a 22" tube, it's only going to be 200 bucks, I don't figure I can go wrong if I end up using it for a tomato stake.

rjhans53, pardon my ignorance but what is a WOW barrel? And on the Savage bbl, minute of deer is good but not great, right?

Post by rjhans53 on Jan 24, 2011 16:34:12 GMT -5
to me a wow barrel is simply one that will consistantly shoot under 3/4 @ 100. The minute of deer is probably a 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 @ 100. The barrel was finished today so it's 6 weeks 2 days, I aiin't complaining a bit
