both would be great, the 300win's gonna have more recoil & they are known to sometimes be finicky for handloaders. i have said before if i could own only 1 rifle for everything it would be a 7 mm. it can be set up w/120gn v-maxes @ approx 3350fps for an excellent varmint gun along with longrange potential on large game using 168gn bergers or even 180's. nice to have a choice like that! you cant go wrong either way.

Either one will do well for the game you have listed, I would look to see if one had the accutrigger or a better scope than the other. I would take which ever one I felt most comfortable with. I personally own a 300wm and a 243, between the two of them they will do anything I want. I believe that the 300wm does a much better job with heavy bullets than the 7mm. I think the 7mm does better with any bullet weight up to 165, but if you are going heavy the 300wm is the way to go.

My 2 big center fire cals, are a 7mm-08 and a 300wm,,,, If I need bigger than the 7mm-08 the 3000wm fits the nitch better

Id go 300Win Mag for you, better jump in ability from the .270,
on the other hand what does your brother already have or want? If he is dead set on one let him have it,,, if he is never gonna go after big stuff let him have the 7mm mag, you already have a very versital gun in the .270, what does he have?

300. If ytou have a 270 and a .243 you can cover all of the ground you cannot with a .300 win mag. the 7mm will be equally well suited for him because he doesn't have anything between a .257 and .308 caliber bullets. inside 200 yards, the 300 win mag is only marginally more capable than a 30-06 and the 7mm would fit the bill for longer ranges for him. where you need a .308 cal for all around short or long range just because its good to have, especially in a magnum. I love my .300 win mag. It is finicky to load for but all hornady factory ammo shoots well in it. With hand loads I can make one wonder where the other 4 shots landed though. Both are great calibers but i am personally not a big fan of the 7mm caliber, I prefer 6.5s but I am a bit of a 6.5mm elitest, which is to ay I think they are the best there is bar none, regardless of cartridge. I am the guy that will look at a 30-[378 and say,"oh, should have gotten a 6.5" Snoddy yeah, but hey I like them. 300 win mag all the way, only thing I own less than 45 cal that wasn't passed down to me other than my 7 6.5mm variants.

If you are buying a new rifle in the magnum class, I'd steer clear of belted magnums. The two calibers that you chose are available in 300 and 7mm Remington Ultra Mag calibers that alleviate a lot of problems if you reload that the belted mags present. If you don't already have the dies and brass and such that's the route I would take. If you only shoot "off the shelf" ammo then it doesn't matter. The guy that reloads your spent brass gets to deal with the hassle. The belted mags are great when that's all there were, but the newer Ultra Mags and WSM's and SAUM are the way to go. They correct all the inherent problems that belted mags posess.Good Shooting!

With the guns you guys already have I agree with CFvickers,,, you should get the 300wm,, loaded with 180 grain bullets of a good BC it will reach way out there if you need it to and do so with authority on Elk-Moose size game
