a friend of mine told me, star up with 55 grains of little gun and work up to 65, agrain at a time,
i found the '' 65 '' too hot, thats why i'm asking real experts.
What should be a safe load using hornady 300 grain fpb, along with little gun powder.
thanks

Lil Gun eats ventliners up real fast. Even at reduced loads. There are a lot better powders to use than Lil Gun in the Savage.
Savage doesn't recommend using full size bullets in their barrels.
Good luck, Mike

marsh1704, You are putting the cart before the horse. Slow down a minute and let me help you out here. First and foremost the hornady FPB conical can not stand up to the pressure of smokeless. We have proven this on the old board and below are a few of the links. I myself even tested it with magnum loads of BH209 and it could not handle that with out the jacket ripping off. This bullet is for much lighter loads than you are thinking about. A better bullet would be the THOR conical that is quite a bit more expensive, but holds up to smokeless, but the load cannot be to hot before skirt rip starts to occur. dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Savage&thread=9543&page=1 dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Savage&action=display&thread=10577Second little gun in the savage has created to many problems and it is not recommended you use it in a savage. I think mainly due to it's small size it can go into the ventliner. This causes two issues severe blow back to the primer and bolt which is not safe and it eats up ventliners very quickly. Third it is not to say you can not use little gun as a duplex load with say N110 as the booster powder and little gun as the primary powder to get around this issue, but you will not find much info on this site for that type of load since there are so many other great powders out there that the people of this board have had great success with. I hope this helps and be careful you have come to the right place for help,

Marsh,, Your friend has to be somewhere around upstate NY. That is where all those crazy guys using that much Lil"gun were from IIRC. I thought they all might have blowed themselves up by now. I would stay away from Lil'gun even in a duplex. Look around the board and you see safe loads. For a 300gr saboted bullet, while not "book" powders, N120 (if you can find it) or 4198 is a real good load.

My ML'er II loves 65 grains of Re-7 behind a 250 grain bullet and a MMP sabot also a 28 guage sub base. Never looked back. Lou
