I thought it may be along those lines. Thanks.

Has anyone got a price with the breech work done? It is not just threading it, as the Savage plug has several steps. It looks something like this, but this is just a sketch and not exact dimensions. Since it will be a 45, they need to bore for the 0.490 lip at the end of the snout!! edge. (I switched sketch)

Edge: I just wrote yesterday and tried to be as specific as possible. I got a prompt response that the price would be $260 for chrome moly and $289 for stainless but I must supply the breech plug. Another member had told me this was the case, he indicated he could get fluting included for less than another barrel supplier for just the barrel. I am tempted at those prices and for comparison sake, I already have an RB PacNor .40 and a Krieger .38 so I am leaning towards McGowan if I get a .45. It would probably be in the 8 groove, 1 in 18 twist but I will get some input before I pull the trigger. I am in no hurry but the turn around is pretty quick. A few on this site have put me on to possible donor guns or the new RW with the larger shank is available but I prefer SS and in the preaccutrigger. Hope this helps a bit.

I wrote Savage-barrels an email encouraging them to observe these posts or jump in with posts, hopefully they will. They could pick up a good customer base here.

edge. Do you have this sketch saved with dimensions??? That might help with an estimate for pricing.

Edge. Good point. I have a smi that has differant requirments than the savage I feel it is easier but not sure if it is better. It is a smaller dia. which I feel is good. There are as you say a # of steps in a savage and I feel there may be a gain with a smaller bore as far as another step that pressure has to go around. Jon

Yes, I have sent Savage-barrels a copy of Edge's link so they would know the work involved. Not sure how they were doing the ones already in the works?

Here are the dimensions but they can't be guaranteed! These were from my measurements many years ago. The thread depth I would say is minimum full threads and should be verified with a breechplug to ensure that it is all the way down. edge. PS NOTE THAT WHEN THE BREECHPLUG IS INSTALLED THAT IT IS RECESSED FROM THE END OF THE BARREL BY ABOUT 1/16 INCH!

Hey,edge, if one is doing .45 barrel would it make sense to make smaller diameter BP,so as to save barrel thickness in that area? Does Pete makes his same as factory dimensions or smaller? Factory BP are easier to locate, but you would think that benefit of stronger bbl will outweigh that.JMHO...

Pete makes his plug to factory specs with a small change in one area.

RB made his, but he supplied the plug too! Tough decision, but I can make my own stuff but most folks can't. If you can't, then I would stick with what is tried and true. edge.

I just ordered my Pacnor today and here is why I choose that route after talking to Dave D.
1) Dave put a lot of time and effort into getting Pacnor to this when no one else would, and Pacnor worked with him to make a great setup. We all owe Dave and Pacnor a lot and I would not want to risk loosing this relationship.
2) Pacnor stands behind every barrel they make including these one off Muzzleloader barrels. Dave has steered them a lot of business, but we are a small amount of the work they do hence the 8 to 10 week lead time. If my barrel comes in from Pacnor and is not a shooter and I have exhausted every possible avenue guess what they will make me a new one free of charge. Can you get that from this other barrel maker?
3) I would rather go with the barrel maker with a longer lead time because he is the guy who is making barrels more barrels everyday and is probably the better of the barrel makers.
3) Look at the results these Pacnor barrels give.
A 100 to 150 dollar saving doesn't sound so good when you put it into perspective does it.

I am willing to give Savage-barrels a fair shake. Relationship with Pacnor, was for what they could do- now someone else is doing it and cheaper. I am sure McGowen is every bit the barrel maker Pacnor is, time will tell. As for the results, they are the only game in town right now. $100 savings sounds pretty good to me.

I agree competition is a good thing, but my point earlier is that we are not even close to Pacnor's main source of income. So I doubt highly they will come down in price.
My fear is that if the number of orders drops for these barrels that they will then drop making them all together. Then you will be right back where we were one manufacturer controlling the prices.
I just wanted to share with everyone things that helped me make my choice. If curiosity or price point are a big factor then perhaps the savage-barrels.com are right for that individual.

Savage-Barrels.com appreciates your inquiries into us having muzzle loader barrels made for the public. We are "not" trying to become the sole source for these barrels, and for us to even think this would be ridiculous. We are not trying to steal away PacNors business, all we are trying to do is give you shooters of these rifles another option.
Our prices are not going to go up, unless our source raises their pricing. And at this time knowing them personally, there is no price increase in the near future.
We are also going to try to find a good source for the breech (any recommendations?) plugs so that we may be able to offer these complete. At this time we do not have the source but are looking into it.
We realize that many wonder why we are reselling products from McGowen Precision Barrels? The simple answer to that is that at one time I was the sales manager of McGowen and I realized then and now that they produce a great product. As we often said at McGowen, we only make one grade of barrel, accurate. Unlike other barrel companies that offer multiple grades of barrels, McGowen prides itself on making it right the first time. Other than that I purchase enough products from them that I get preferred pricing and I pass that savings on to you.
Our prices are $250 + shipping in chrome moly (blued) and $265.00 in stainless + shipping. Currently our turn around is approximately 6 weeks, could be sooner, but as a salesman I would rather tell you 6 weeks and have it delivered in 4 and have you happy rather than disappointed at it taking 6 weeks.
We are also offering the barrels for the Remington ML action. Same thing, we would need the breech plug to complete the barrel. We are also looking for a source for those too.
If you have any questions you can contact me at products@savage-barrels.com or call 406-992-3202. If I don't answer, leave a message and I promise to get back to you as quickly as I can.

Pposey are you talking about that vs savage?

Post by pposey on Feb 3, 2011 9:52:13 GMT -5
Yep,, I like the smaller diameter of the SMI plug so more barrel is left,,,,, it is also shorter but still has all the threads needed, I have been getting the same amount of carbon back into the threads as with the savage plug, 2 threads or so have carbon on them after 20 shots.

I also like how the vent liner in not recessed in the SMI, but wish the vent liner was longer, it's very short and I like to use Teflon tape on vent and plug,,, to hard to tape the stubbie SMI liner,, have to use anti seize

Any pics of the SMI BP and ventliner? I would like to see the differance between SMI and Savage. Here are the two side by side. Thread length is very close to the same for each. I use Savage vents for my plug. Thing to keep in mind. Does a person want this short of a plug on a bolt gun where ignition is in the same area as the barrel threads? I like the SMI plug better but mine is on a Ruger #1 and the ignition area is beyond the barrel threads.

According to Dave D for the 700ML DD Pacnor barrels the combination of Hunters bolt nose kit, the Savage breechplug, and a stock 3/16" recoil lug, puts the tip of the breechplug just past the threads into the meat of the barrel by design.
