I've been reloading more years than I care to talk about. I've always closed my eyes and said it's about this fps (what the books say). In making my own IN round (it's a 358 win with the shoulders pushed back .283 and the neck trimmed for the rest) I decided I really needed to know what it's shooting so in devoping a load I'd end up with a better idea of what powder to shoot. My 2 358 win's one of them is just below what the books say and the other is about 80 fps below. You know that doe I shot after Christmas didn't care a bit that I was only shooting around 2340 fps or so, but it has me scratching my head some now on the rest of my "book" loads. ;D Oh and my 358 ws (winchester short) is running about 2300 mol 13' from the end of the barrel

im curious of your load data, maybe imr 4895/225?, reason i ask im working my way through the burn charts & im in the middle of some pretty extensive testing for the 35wssm,i almost said ok w/2300fps,then some h4198 pushed/225 @2700fps w/accuracy,huge difference especially @ long range which is my intention, got my attention, still testing! wildcatting is a higher level of education imo! ;D//ps-i have chrono'd for years,in my findings overall most of the time book loads are higher usually 100-300fps on average.

The load I'm messing with is 4198 pushing a 200 gr coreloc. I ran some varget and some 4895. The varget was had a really good velocity spread (17 fps) but it was only around 2100. 4895 was 2050 or there abouts with 77 fps spread. I've got a 358 bfg ordered (and paid for) for my howa action, but with what I'm getting here, don't know if I'll even use it much, time will tell.

Handloader mag. #254 has a very good article about the 358Win/338Fed. I have loaded for the 358 for a number of years using 3031 and 2520. After reading this article I switched to the Western Powders TAC w/Fed 215mag. primer and won't look back. 50.5gr w/Hornady 200 SP 2600 fps grouping @1.5" and abit better if I have a good day. This TAC is a great powder for the the 358.

I'm putting together a 358 BFG right now for DanS and waiting or a new recoil lug. Its on a Savage 16 WSM action. It should be ready to shoot by this weekend or so. He wants to use the 225 Nosler Acubond since it has the best BC of the .358 bullets. Speeds should be in the 2500 - 2600 fps. I too have a barrel on order and will be putting mine together in a couple months. Should be a very interesting gun to work with. Mike

Not that it means anything to what your results will be Mike but I've never been able to get the 225 Accubonds to shoot well in either the .358 Winchester or the 35 Whelen. I really don't understand it because I got good results out of the 35 Whelen with the Ballistic Tips which were essentially the same bullet. I've switched to the 225 Sierra and have been pleased even though that bullet was my second choice. I've mostly stuck with the W748 in the 358 Winchester with 200 grain bullets although I've gotten good velocities with 250 grain bullets with BL-C(2).

Whelenman,
DanS supplied me with several different .35 bullet weights and brands but he wants the Accubond to be the first choice and Varget to be the powder. Testing should begin next week. Mike

just make sure to always start low & work up,different chambers(17 variations),very different results/pressures, i suggest w/start around 41-42.0gns & work up while chronographing.

Alot depeonds on the chamber of the rifle, I have 2 Stevens 7mm-08s that both shoot very very well with the exact same load of 45 grains varget and a 120BT,,,,, one is going 3110fps, and one 3050fps,,,,

I think the book calls for 3100fps for that load,,,,
