For those who read JaKe The Woodsman, Jake has suffered with bladder cancer for a year or so now. Yesterday he had a stroke and is in critical condition. Not expected to live long now. He is 92 years old and has lived a long life. Mostly did what he wanted to do. I am not able to visit him and have no desire to see him when he is in a comma. Wouldn't do either of us any good. When he goes, if he does before me? That will leave only me of that clan left. He gave a lot to our country in world war 2 so I hope that his passing is painless. I felt like passing this news on to those of you who remembers Jake from the book. Ben (Bob in the book)

Ben, I will pray for your brother. Thanks for informing us. My own aunt, a fine person hangs in the last moments of life also, as I write, 92 or 93 y.o. Hang in there. Jake led a fine life.

Ozark I’m saddened to hear of Jake’s condition as I have come to know him through your writings. He is a unique individual I’ve come to respect as I followed his journey into manhood.
Thoughts and prayers.

May He who bears our burdens, bear yours and his at this time. "It is appointed unto man once to die, and after that, the Judgment". It is our fate, all of us. No one escapes. Those left behind surely do suffer, though. Loss of love is so hard.
God bless you.

I am getting PM wondering if there is any change. The answer is no. He is holding his own but confined to his bed. He has always been tough so he may crawl out of bed yet. Thank you all for the prayers and concern. Ben. Or Bob, if we are going to call him Jake.

Jake is bedfast and talks out of his head most of the time. He thinks all the family are yet alive and ask how they are doing. He is also talking about things that he seen in WW11. In that he is arguing a lot about people taking foolish moves without realizing why. He keeps telling everyone to keep down and keep shooting. Under the circumstances staying alive isn't really a blessing for him or for those taking care of him. Thanks to all for your prayers and PMs sent to me. Ozark

I really liked Ben and even wanted to move to Arkansas so we could continue our friendship. Years ago I ordered his book online but never got a copy of it. It was then that I found that he had passed away. I made a comment on the 'home' notice of his passing. Ben, you are missed. (maybe some day I will find a copy of his book) Mike

You know sometimes when I see old thread replied to I think I should have instituted a limit on how long a thread can be replied to... And then this thread is rejuvenated, and it makes me remember Ben, and the other members that have passed.
Shed a tear, have a drink, say a prayer, hug your kid or grandkids, and just remember how short life is...cheers!

We briefly stopped in Leslie a few months ago (great little bakery!) but made a point to drive by Ben’s house. Just not the same. There was a warmth there. Ben did a good job of getting married. Mrs Ben was a lady. And Ben was a gentleman.

Several years ago I stopped by Bens place to visit with him and his wife..they were a very loving couple and cared deeply for each other.....this was very apparent to me.My time spent with Ben and his wife was but a brief moment in time but they left a ever lasting impression on me...people from a different era and the salt of the earth.

Yeah. Old threads seem to be viable to revive and relive. And this proves it.
