Hello, I'm new to the board and looking for some help. I am finishing up an 45-70 encore conversion that Slufoot did the BP on.(thanks slufoot). From searching this site it seems like a lot of you are using H-4198 but I can't find any locally. What I do have is IMR-4198 and some 200 gr SST and xtp's with the light blue sabots.
So my question is where is a good place to start, 59 grns and work up? Does anybody out there use the IMR vs H-4198.
Any info will help.

IMR 4198 and H 4198 are virtual twins. The H meters better, and IMO the H is a touch cleaner.
I use 57gr H4198 with HLB sabot and Barnes 195 knurled. I have shot up to 60 but no higher. Accuracy for me was best at 57gr.
I personally wouldn't go over 60 grains.

To answer your other question I've used IMR4198 in the same gun and performance was about the same. I just have more H4198 on hand and stuck with it.

Try starting with 55 grains of IMR and work up. Knurl the bullets and wait 15 minutes between shots. I use IMR because it's $2 cheaper. I have pretty good accuracy and don't see any reason to switch to h4198. Use Win 209 primers they will seal better than the rest however they are not the hottest primer out there.

Thanks for the info. I not that familiar with knurling the bullets. I know the process from reading but never done it. I take it that its done for a little tighter fit in the bore? Mine seems to load just a tad easier than my black powder encore barrel. In general should they be about the same resestence?

Knurling can be two things one yes tighter fit another reason is to get the bullet and sabot to have complete connection together so the number doesn't slip in the sabot and cause accuracy issues.
Use two files together and run the bullet between them. Try starting out with just making marks on the bullet for the connection between the bullet and sabot. If you don't see accuracy the way you want it try running the bullet harder between the files to get good deep marks. I'd go in a step by step process to find perfect fit.
The biggest thing is the sabot. They don't stand up to hear very well so you'll need to wait a good amount of time between shots. During the cold months not so much.

Thanks. I just read my original post. I meant to say 50 grains and work. I fat fingered it with 59. It seems like people are finding a good load some where between 52 and 57 grains of H-4198. I hope IMR is the same.
Thanks.

Knurling helps alot for me,,,, you can really see where the bullet engages the sabot and my groups tightened up in my encore conversion

I will try it and see . I finally found some H-4198 so now I can try both. Just waiting on the weather to break so I can see what it does.
