I will be forever grateful to a new friend I made recently. A guy at my dads work was interested hearing about my smokeless mz's. He bought a Savage 2 yrs ago, and trusted me to set it up for him. It was a shooter from day one with a 43gr sr4759, and a 250gr bonded shockwave. He killed a doe last season with a head/neck shot near 100yd. He is hooked! Now his friend also wanted in on the fun and found a local 10ml2 also. Same deal, trying for an easy load with standard components for him. Having a little tougher time getting his gun to shoot consistently, but getting there. We have went over the whole routine many times, and made sure each step was understood and why. Anyway, this past Sunday, while letting his barrel cool between shots, I loaded my gun (Sav 45Pac) sabotless with 10/50 sr4759/h4198 300gr sst and wool wad. I had the gun on the bench, but decided to take it off and turn the box (target) to have a clean aiming point. I got back and loaded the gun, got it on the bench again, took the safety off, and heard Ken say "WAIT" did you shoot while I went to my truck? I said I didn't think so. So we checked the charges we had layed out and it looked good. I double checked with my witness mark and OH MY GOD it was not right! We pulled the gun down pushed out the load(s). It was a double load. I thanked him over and over and explained how it could have been a disaster, not only for the gun but both of us. I shook his hand and told him I will be forever grateful and owe him a dinner. Funny how you can pound info into someones head for safety and yet so stupidly not "practice what you preach!" Thanks again Ken.

Jay, Thais for posting this! It is a great reminder that we all make mistakes, I remember thinking how can someone double load and shoot their rifle of they put a witness mark on there rifle. Well I double loaded and glad I had my witness mark on my rifle because it saved my butt. Just goes to show you it happens to all of us sooner or later.
GLAD YOUR OKAY! THANKS KEN!

Wish that guy would have been shooting with me about 4 years ago!

Glad it ended the way it did versus how it could have.

Whew, what a close one...Glad it turn out on a good note...from your story,NOW I am JUST going to load then shoot from now on when at a range...meaning I will make sure everything is clear for me to shoot before loading...Imo most double loads happen at a range from what has been reported here ...

Witness mark is good but I put a new primer in mine EVERY time I get done loading my ML. Just my habit and It's a no brainer. Open bolt and if there's a primer there it's loaded. If there is a situation where I don't want a live primer in the gun I put a used one in it. But then I know it's loaded just the same. I always load on an open bolt also. No loading on a live primer for sure that way.

Yep a very close call. I rarely ever shoot with anyone. We had too many things going on and guys waiting in line for our 200yd bench. No excuse though. PLEASE BE CAREFUL! Definitely will have new system in order for loaded gun indicator next time out (LIKE ACTUALLY CHECKING THE WITNESS MARK)! I was pretty shook up for quite some time afterwards. Mostly embarrassed but the pictures of Luke's gun fresh in my mind didn't help any either.

Distractions ,interactions and public ranges ....just not a safe environment for smling....other firearm disciplines don't require what we need to do ...I'm surprised there isn't more sub blow ups...it happened with an omega on youtube... when I took Rodne to the range to sight his gun in...I told him to spot me and I would spot him on our loading sequence...he saved me from not loading a wad before a 275be ....I thought he was done so I went up for a coke and when I came back he had loaded a bullet without powder....He's a newbie and I told him I was glad it happened to him just to show how easy it is to mess up and technique is crucial....Then he goes and shoots a booner with it, go figure....lol.

No loading on a live primer for sure that way. Good idea that one. On the range I try to leave bolt open when loaded. I also load on open bolt. I guess we can all screw mailbox flags on the side of our rifles and flip them up when loaded. Lol. You are fortunate your friend noticed.

Everyone with a story like that should share it. It shows how many ways there are to screw up. Thanks for the story.
