We used to convince ourselves we needed firepower at these hunts for fast follow up shots and more shells than a muzzy has. I have used a 12 ga with foster slugs several times in these hunts before upgrading over the years to high performance guns. You simply cannot beat a 1 oz slug for fast, close in shots, that's a fact. But, it never fails to have a longer shot than is capable and very rarely have multiple shots at once, so we have abandoned that notion a while ago.

Yeah, I missed an opportunity at a pair of 140" bucks three years ago because I had a slug gun. The next year I had a NULA muzzleloader.

I don't miss my slug gun at all. It was also a single shot, but I could reload it almost as fast as shooting a pump I'm fortunate to hunt private ground, so I usually take the center lung broadside shot to give myself the largest room for error, but if it's a deer I want on the ground now, I'm taking the high shoulder shot if the conditions are right. Wilms, the buck in my avatar took a 310gr APB center mass through the lungs at 180 yds, missed ribs going in and out. He took off like a scalded cat and didn't leave a drop of blood for 80 yds, then only small spots then a bit more until we finally found him about 175 yds away. Amazing how far they can run when they want to.

What does anybody think about a 240xtp mag sabotless for a deer stopper? I have 400 some of those. Anybody shot a deer at high speed, say 2400-2800fps+? Will it come apart? I also have a bunch of 250 and 300gr Barnes Expanders, but never tried them sabotless. Anybody try them in a 45? Anneal? Not popular because not a pointy, but one hell of a deer bullet. Maybe I will try one or two loads to see if I can get one to shoot at 100yd. Maybe? Too d**n many choices to mull over nowadays. I almost miss the old days of one or two choices. ALMOST!!!

High shoulder = bang flop with some room for error

I had at least 6 deer in a row drop in their tracks. Each time I aimed --and hit, just behind the shoulder using Barnes Spitfires and more recently 310APE or 300 MH. The exit holes were huge. Several shots were a bit far back but they dropped anyway. Then I saw a big deer drop dead and be gone when we got there. Lastly I saw my brother drill a doe that ran over 1500 yards before we lost her. That shook my confidence so I'm going back to high shoulder. My dad taught me to cut up my own meat. I wouldn't think of turning that over to a stranger. I notice I don't get that much off front shoulders anyway. It often goes into roasts that primarily benefit the four-legged members of the family, including the pig. But they don't mind eating blood meat that is properly cared for. So I don't see a big downside in going back to shoulder shots.

Another vote for the shoulder shot here. Literally hundreds have fallen in their tracks doing depredation control work here. My son and I used the 195 exclusively in our .45s for 2 years. Between us 86 fell to the 195 BX. Shots ranged from point blank to 326 yards. Only a hand full went any distance and that was due to poor shot placement. The vast majority took instant dirt naps with the shoulder shots. Like its bigger brother the BO nothing stops it. I am currently using a Savage 111 chambered in .243 pushing a little ole 80 GMX pill. Instant naps with the shoulder shots. Get that .45 of yours running in the 2700-2800 fps arena and your holding on hair to 300 yds. Good luck!

Tars words have never led me in the wrong direction since encountering him on this forum. Always good, solid advice from a wise woodsman and hunter, and fellow hoosier I might add. Thanks bud! Jay

tar12 and his son have taken a pile of deer, wise to listen to what his experience has proven.

Shoulder shots down them pretty quick. My longest runner was about 60 yds with a chest shot. Recovered the bullet in the hind quarter expanded to around 70-75 cal. Think the bullet was a 300 gr xtp. Shooting from close range will definitely aid in recovery. If you shoot a deer 50 yds away from you and he makes it another 50 or so it will be hard for someone else to recover that one.

Your welcome Jay I am very fortunate to be able to REALLY wring out loads while performing the depredation work. The only reason I switched to the .243 is for the extra shots that it allows.
