I get this call last night. " Hi we have two elk down and need some help" OK Where and when? We make some plans and at 4:00 AM I'm off.We meet up at the trail head and I get some more Info. They shot two Rag horns at about 10: AM the morning before. The came back to the camp and got the Game cart, then back up. It was over two miles to the elk so they tried to cheat and make only one trip. The Cheep Chinese peace of crap they had,( It is 10 years old and has hauled out numerous elk, deer, antelope, Goose decoys ext) Needed new tires most of the bars where bent, most of the bunjy cords where to keep it together not hold in the game. Got them BOTH cut up some and stuffed into, and On the cart. With one up front and one in back they start to heard the cart down off the Mountain, Ya right. After about a half mile it happened, Catastrophic tire failure. Now what? Back down to camp to get the pack frames. Up the hill and start the auguries work. As the light was fading they had made three trips and only had one elk mines the head and one back strap/ tenderloin off the other. This is where I came in. I came up and brought the BIG black utility sled. It had snowed some the day before but that only made the walking muddy. We thought if we started VERY EARLY the mud would be frozen and hopefully a good layer of frost would let the sled slide better. It did thank god, but it would turn back in to muck at first light. In the dark and cold we all started back up to retrieve the elk and now the cart too. An hour in to the ascent I'm thinking to my self " Note to my self, Put Vaseline all over my elk tag and shove it up someplace the sun don't shine" We finally find the mess.
It looked like they had a blow out AND hit a tree. Stuff all over the trail, nope thats the way they left it... With a little work we had both heads, meat, coats, hats and crashed cart all tied in to the sled.
Back down in the dark, snow/frost, and COLD. A long hour later we could see light from the Highway,Yeah! Slid it all under the fence ( locked gate) ,with a little jockeying we got the little truck in to a bank and slid the whole sled in the back. WOW that was 5 hours out of my life I'll never get back.
Got them all back to town and dropped off at the processor now and I'm hitting the hot tub. :gr: Next time I hope they shoot smaller animals...
