For what it's worth: Before the snow melted I did a lot of shooting. Bullets were hitting 2 feet of snow fairly fluffy and horizontally. The other day when setting up targets I found two 185 gr and one 250 gr XTP in almost perfect shape. They mic'd exactly the same as some unfired ones. All these bullets were with reduced loads (probably in the 1500-1600 range)
I am not making an opinion on this...just sharing the experience. Wish I didn't chuck those bullets. I will try and find some more.
I think there are a huge array of dynamics here such as bullet construction, speed, sabot design, initial pressure etc. What happens to one bullet in a perfect sabot fit at slow speed may not be the same thing that happens to another bullet driven faster in a poor sabot choice (sabot for boattail using a FB bullet for example) that leaves room for the bullet to "flow" or compress.
Lots of dynamics.

Lots of dynamics, opportunities, frustrations, options, etc.

Edge..........why do you think I am arguing with you? ?? I'm not! I am just trying to visualize the bullet expanding and filling the bore. Hence WIGGLING less than the .050" you had described? Richard

SNIP ........Would this not further indicate that the bullet would be doing little "wiggling" no matter what type of sabot was used? SNIP I guess I misread this, but it still seems to imply No Wiggle from your point of view! edge.

I have been at the range the last two mornings trying to get respectable groups out of the 250 xtp,s with no luck. Will put 4-5 shots out of 8 in a 1-1/2" group but the other three makes close to 4" groups. Tried 68-69-70 gr. 4198 with both guns and still not much sucess. Got one 2" 3 shot group with 68gr H4198, all others were over 3". Also tried 42 gr VV n110 and one group was 2-1/2" and the other over 3". I was swabing with wet patch followed by a dry patch between shots. When done shot 300 gr. .458 hornadys with bcr and 68 gr. 4198 and all 3 were touching with no swabbing between shots in one gun and 2-1/4" group out of the other.
