Just about have my brother convinced to have SMI convert his H&R .45/70 buffalo classic to sml. For $125, do you get a ram rod and primer removal tool?

Not sure on the conversions but I do know the primer tool is $5 each as I bought an extra for when I loose the original. ;D

No Ramrod for the $125.00 price. The ramrod is $30.00 extra. SMI is converting my H&R 45-70 this week for me. Kid...

Finally a guinea pig. Good luck, that might just be an awesome conversion but with a more traditional look to it.

Thanks Fellas. I'm working him awful hard, told him I'd pack it up and handle the shipping and receiving for him as well. I want him to do it pretty bad and will take lots of pics

Yep, and he plans to shoot it with the sights that are on it, no optics. Gun holds really well, balances great. I hope he pulls the trigger so I can

Ya know it will still be about the same lenght as a 24 inch ML2,,,, my 26 inch encore is slightly shorter than my 21 inch ML2 was!
That recoil pad, or lack of could hurt bad though on me old shoulder

He's had the gun for about 18 months and hasn't even shot it yet I told him when converted to think of it as an on the fly situation specific reloader, he can't hunt with it here unless we convert it. Recoil shouldn't be too bad, we don't plan to get crazy with it, no need to with the open sites, probably 275BEs or 250 barnes sabotless around 21-200 fps. He may go all trad and stick with a heavy hard cast at 14-700 fps.

I handled one tonite at a gun show, it was under $400. It actually handles kinda nice for a long barrel. It had the Creedmore type tang site on it too. Way cool build IMO.

Ok fellas, one more question.
I called Ron and talked a bit more about this, he said they need to know what loads we'll be shooting as if they use their standard plug it leaves some of the chamber intact and you have to make sure to use enough powder so there is no chance of the bullet leaving the bore. They also have a longer plug which eliminates this potential problem but ignition is most likely better with the shorter plug.
Brother is likely to play with heavy bullets and lighter loads, so the longer plug sounds like a no brainer. If he has ignition issues we could recess it I assume.
Which plug did you go with and why?

Need to find out hos much chamber is left with the standard plug,,,, I'm not sure which I have plug wise but I'd bet it is the standard one? do you have measurements? I could measure for ya on my encore,,, IF you know the amount of chamber left you can figure how much of a powder column it would take to fill it.

No idea on measurements. Ron said he'd need to use at least 40ish grains of powder. Just not sure how much of what powder would be needed to push a heavy bullet 1500ish if he goes the traditional route.

Dan asked me on my H&R conversion if I was going to shoot light loads like 30-40 grains and said if so he would install the longer breech plug so it would fill the void where the powder would go or if I was shooting the heaver loads like 50-60 grains or so he would install the shorter BP. I went with the shorter BP cause I'm gonna try H-4198 58-62 grains 195 Barnes Harvester smooth blue sabots and hope I get some decent groups. I also got a call from SMI this afternoon and they said my barrel shipped back to me today. Kid...
