I finally got around to getting a set of forming dies in .40 cal. These dies are the same as the ones I use for my .452 and .458 bullets, the challenge was reshaping and still maintaining a suitable ogive that would provide an improved B.C. on such a short bullet. Like the other larger bullets, the lead core is forced through the hollow point and reformed into more of a truncated tip, similar to the mag tip. I feel the closed nose not only helps with aerodynamics it also aids to more of a controlled expansion. here's a pic of the modified bullet.

When are you going to shoot some? OnecardChuck did something like that about a year ago,I think he added lead to the point then shaped it, I thought it was cool ,but he said the accuracy didn't improve. Maybe your alteration will be better, good luck with it,let us know how it shoots. Thanks

I would love to get something like those in a 220gr. I sure hope it works out for you. The small flat point just might make the normal 200gr XTP HP a bit better killer too at higher impact speeds.

Paul...........They look very good. Now my bullet pointing is no where as good as yours but, this is what I have found. My pointed XTP's and Noslers will shoot very good at 100 yards whether pointed or standard. However.........at 200, I found that the un-pointed bullets actually shot more accurately? Any thoughts? or your experience? Richard

My pointed XTP's and Noslers will shoot very good at 100 yards whether pointed or standard. However.........at 200, I found that the un-pointed bullets actually shot more accurately? Any thoughts? or your experience? Richard I believe it has to do with how the bullets are pointed or spitzerized. In the early stages of my bullet forming my crude reforming nose punch would produce a bullet that appeared to be well formed but inessence the bullet wasn't balanced or centered, my newer dies are dead nutz . They even make the bullet concentric which I believe ensures the bullet will shoot more accurately. It really isn't too difficult to get a bullet to shoot well at 100 yrds , it's the 200 and 300 yrd mark that determines if a bullet will shine or not. Maybe that is the reason your modified bullets aren't making the grade at the increased yardages. I'm not knocking your modified bullets just trying to give an explaination as to what might be the reason .

Smokeeter
Nice work as usual.
Have to ask about the base of the reformed bullets. It appears that the radius on the base is removed when the bullets are reformed?

Good observation ET...If not completely eliminated it appears close...

Good observation ET...If not completely eliminated it appears close... You're right ET that 4 ton hydraulic press squeezes the $#!T out of everything it has to seat the bullet before the nose can be forced back up and out the hollow pt. The base is now square to the side of the bullet with no hint of the old radius. It should help with obturation.

Ya know I was actually thinking about that!!! I bought a whole pile of 10mm ammo from somebody recently whole variety pack with some heavy loaded 200 grain flatpoints,, Norma I think.

Any news yet?
BTW have you tried this mod on a Nosler 200gr yet? I may send some to a friend with the equipment to reshape them into a near spitzer. Hopefully he can make them with little to no exposed lead at the tip. I mainly just want him to close the HP a bit or into a flat point with a .17 metaplat.

Paul. If it were not for you and the bullets I got from you way back then I would not be shooting a sml today. When Paul talks it pays to listen. Jon

Very nice work! Most guys seem to get good accuracy out of the 200 XTP's, just concerned about the fragmentation at high velocities?
