Ever since buying my Sav 50 cal 10MLIISS years ago I have used nothing but the plastic jug IMR SR 4759 powder, WW 209 primer, 250 grain Shockwave bullet, and MMP short black sabot. The fit is tight in my bore. I load my gun at the beginning of the muzz deer hunting season and it remains loaded, locked in the truck at night, until the end of the muzz season. I have never had a fail to fire incident with this combination and method.
I am low on powder and was considering trying one of the other highly recommended powders with a 300 grain Shockwave or maybe the 300 gr Barnes Original semi-spitzer bullet. My question is, are all of the popular powders discussed here (V120, 4198, AA5744, etc.) as clean shooting and as reliable as 4759 for ignition, consistentcy, etc.?
Thanks, Dave

As far as clean shooting, Vihtavouri powders are about as clean as it gets for me. I've used N110 and currently use N120 w/ 300 gr. SST's. In my experience, they're cleaner shooting than IMR SR4759. I've never used 5744 and have very limited shooting with H4198.

N120 has never failed me, even when left loaded for 2 weeks in and out of the house during december.

Dave1 : AA5744 wins the award for the dirtiest smokeless that I ever used. I like Re7 and 10x for the heavier bullets, but others have thier favorites also. It's not what you like, it's what your rifle likes. Good Luck on your quest!

N120 is hard to beat for being clean burning & a good match for the Savage ML and 300 gr bullets. 57-60 gr's seems to be sweet spot. N120 can be hard to find though and $$$$! If you can't find N120, then H4198 (67-70 gr's) or RL-7 (63-70 gr's) are good choices. Mark

For the money ($23lb) Re7 is hard to beat and 63grs is very comfortable to shoot. It felt very similar in recoil to 60gr of N120 ($33lb) which i would love to get at a lower price and better availability. Both shot very well with my limited testing with 300gr+ bullets. Ive never tried 4198 so i cant compare it.
N110 is probably fine too with book loads and doesn't need nearly as much powder. Its also easier for me to get than N120 but its still expensive. It seems to be very clean but if you are after max fps, it might fall short of your needs with some 300gr bullets.

N120 is available now from Sinclair Intl. in the 1# jugs if anyone is looking for some. www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=33333/avs|Manufacturer_1=VIHTAVUORI/Product/Vihtavuori_N120_Powder___1_lbI'll continue to use it until something gives me a reason not to. I've had real good luck with it but I only shoot 300 gr. bullets with it and I switched to magnum primers a couple years back. I've only had a couple of FTF's at the bench, one from a Barnes TMZ EZ Load sabot and the other from oil in the barrel that contaminated the powder. Both my fault, but never a failure to ignite otherwise. IF I ever have a problem with N120, I'd try Reloader 7 or Hodgdon 4198 with the 300 grainers but so far, so good!

I have never used N120, N110 and SR4759 are both accurate with 300gr bullets in my rifle. H4198 has much better velocity out of my gun with pretty good accuracy, the recoil is much heavier though.

Your powders ability to ignite today, tomorrow or 2 weeks from now is much more contingent of your loading regiment, cleaning (or lack of) procedure, and steps taken to keep the muzzle and breech dry than it is on which powder you choose.
Also important is a tight fit and an amount of powder that creates proper pressure.

Since 4759 worked good for you Id buy another jug or two and continue using it. Mike

Also, check the load database to be sure, but N110 can be used with 250 and 300gr bullets in similar amounts, and 4759 is often compared to it, so maybe you could continue using 4759 with the bullets you want to try and go back to the tried and true load if they don't perform like you want?

Since 4759 worked good for you Id buy another jug or two and continue using it. Mike Thats what I'd do,,,, course you could get some other powders to play with,,, errr I mean research performance that is,,,, 4759 is a easy to fire powder that is more tolerant of a loose fit or bullet weight and is really easy to find

Like others have stated what works for you is what you need to stick with. I spent alot of money trying to find what my gun likes. Mine turned out to like dirty ole AA5744. Shes a dirty girl.....I've always been attracted to those types!!! ;D
AA5744 gets a bad rap. Decent velocity, mild recoil and I still can shoot 30-40 times before my ventliner needs to be cleaned/changed. Either way its better than going back to Pyrodex.
