OK. I have finally saved up enough money to move forward with a Smokeless Encore 45-70 conversation and I have a question in regards to the barrel length. Do I go with a Encore 24" barrel or a Pro Hunter 20" barrel? and why? please explain. Thanks in advance for your help.

I think 24" and 26" barrels are the only ones avaliable from what I could see from the Cabelas site. I have a 24" and it shoots great with 62 grains of h4198.

If you go longer...You could always have some removed. ? If you can get your hands on bothe of them ..maybe at a store..see if one may balance better for you Drop

I have a 24" on mine and it's short enough. I would think the 26" is ok too. I think the 20" is the Khatidin(?) barrel. My 24" barrel balances real good. However with the slower powders I get a pretty good flame/flash with the 24" barrel. I would think with the 20" barrel muzzle flash would be even worse. Been there, got the T shirt, done that, and if doin it again I'd go for a 26" if I could get one. I also posted a cost analysis of my conversion. It is up in the "build" forum. To me it looked like a wash as to converting a TC 45-70 or just getting a SMI barrel for the Encore to start with. My $.02. 10 ga

Stay away from the 20 on the encore,, I had a 21 inch pacnor on a ML2 and it limited the loads I could use,, my 26 inch encore is shorter overall than the ML2 with the 21 inch barrel.
