According to a quick Google search they appear to be a 1-22 twist with cut rifling and a cast frame (earlier models). Handis are a 1-20 IIRC.

Didn't these have the cast iron frames? I was told your better off buying a Handi-rifle which has a stronger frame. Of course with a breechplug frame strength isn't as critical.

IF it can handle a 45/70 cartridge it auta be able to handle a ML barrel and breach plug,,,,

Im no expert on that model or the conversions but it appears it was made to shoot cast bullet loads. You can draw your own conclusions from that part. I would still be cautious of a cast frame regardless. Even if it is safe, it will likely get "sloppy" faster than a newer Handi 45/70 model or SB2 frame.

You have to watch as there are like 3 load levels for a 45-70. The "Trapdoor" level which will pump a 300gr out at around 1500fps. The "Sharps" level which comes out at around 2000fps and then the "Modern" level which guys pump out at 2500fps and beyond in like Ruger #1s. I was told IIRC the H&R recommended load was the light "Trapdoor" loads.
Again with a breechplug the chamber pressure concern is with the barrel. You only have to worry about the frame handling the recoil stress and maybe containing things if the breechplug fails.

I'm not taking the timo look it up but wasn't there a Buffalo Hunter H&R complete with a hexagonal barrel in 45-70? I'd always thought that that would be an interesting gun to convert. Really need to see if the land to land distance is the same all the way down the barrel. I think there has been discussion on this with this make in the past.

My brother has the H&R buffalo classic with the long barrel (don't think it's hex) and the williams peep sights. I've dropped a parker in it and it slowly slid down the barrel pretty evenly. I'm trying to convince him to spend the money to convert it and get another barrel for cartridge shooting, so far no luck. It's a neat gun for sure.

the H&R buffalo classic would be a really nice build but not sure about that curved steel buttplate,, that sucker would hurt,,,, a 32 inch barrel is wayyyyy out there as well
