just some facts...................
Yesterday started out about 54* and got up to 708 by noon when we left. Wind was dead until about 10:30.
To get the barrel "warmed up" I again tried those 220 gr. plated X-Treme bullets, this time with a much lower charge of H-4198 ( 56 gr.) Not great, but accuracy seemed to relate to velocity. Shots 1, 4 & 5 were all in the same range and grouped nicely together while 2 & 3 which were slower grouped together.
Savage Shooter had been complaining about the SST with its rounded base not doing too well for him? So I machined the base on five and shot two groups.........each with the standby 62 gr. of H-4198. Each had some shinning moments, but neither one was better than the other?
Savage Shooter had also been toying with a duplex using N-120 as the starter and H-4198 as the main charge. In the recent past, I had shot a group with 60 gr. of N-120 and a group with 60 gr. of H-4198 (200 gr. saboted bullets) The 120 averaged 2700 fps the 4198.... 2635 fps. About 2% faster. So, I shot target #4 with a load he listed and which Herman shot two weeks ago..........13/53---120/4198. Deer good but thats about it?
I then (did this at home) shot a five shot group with the two powders thoroughly mixed just for the heck of it? The velocity was slightly higher, but not much? And, it actually grouped better?
I then went with the triplex I had been shooting quite a lot and it produced the best 100 yard results of the day (which were not great today).
Next, I wanted to try these 200 gr. Noslers both plain and the ones I pointed (they both shot great at 100 yards last week) at 300 yards to see how the pointing might effect the BC? Bad news! The pointed one were all over the place.........while the plain ones put five in 3.1".
I also shot a five shot group with the SST's and the same triplex load but I believe the wind got me a bit
And lastly, I recovered some bullets in the 300 yard berm. I know for a fact (based on where I found it) that the 200 gr. FTX which was shot a week or so ago, penetrated one of the tires in part of our backstop. The 200 Noslers did a good job of staying together and retaining weight. The SST's were also killers
One thing of note.............The 200 FTX sabot less showed no signs of any rifling on the sides (and I could plainly see my file knurling marks) Obturation??? Hardly!
