Thanks SLUFOOT for the machine work. Absolutely no soot or blow-by. The 1st group I shot was using P POsey's 31 grs of 4759, shot a bughole. Went to 10x from 58 to 61 grs. Groups opened up. Went to H4198 from 53 to 56grs, groups opened up again. 200gr xtp knurled and light blue harv sabot. Today re- visted Sr 4759 at 39grs, shot another bughole. Went to 40 grs ang group opened up a little. This barrel seems to be telling me it likes faster burning powder. Anyone with knowledge of 4759, could you give me upper limits of powder in the 45. I know some give projected pressures and velocities using Powley and Quickload. Any help would be appreciated. James

I can run a couple of 200xtps with 39 grains 4759 through my encore and measure the speed,,, be nice if one of the pressure trace guys could check that load

With my Bergara I am shooting 62 grains of H4198, CCIM, blue harvestors and 195 Barnes.

Seeing how those pressure traces were for a 300 grain sabotless it seems that a 200 grain with sabot should be much less,,,

James, What is the twist rate and length of your barrel? You are by no means limited to 30 grns of powder. you will find low starting charges to be very accurate and then as you increase charge weights groups will open up and THEN you will find the sweet spot again. IMO,you are to low on the H-4198. START@ 60grn and work up to 64 grns.

The length of barrel is 24". When you minus out the breechplug it is right at 22". The twist is 1 in 20 if I remember correctly. Am putting h4198 in powder vials as we speak. I now have shot up to 59grs of h4198. These loads are becoming thumpers on both ends. Thanks for all the replies. James

Is there anyone on here that could tell me why I can't see this post in Savage Smokeless Muzzleloading? I can only find it by going to the new topics near the top of page. It also shows I have had zero replies. Guess I didn't do something right. Thanks

I started at 56grs. H- 4198 and worked up, when I hit 60 they opened up and at 62 they were all over the place. But this is in a 20'' Handi Rifle. I think 59grs in this rifle may be max before blowing sabots.

you are probably not burning all that powder in a 20 inch barrel, with a 21 inch barrel I had a hard time with over 54 grains of 4198,,, made a huge fireball and that can't be good for accuracy.

Yea I kinda wondered about that, how about some VV-110? Should work good in a short barrel, easy to ignite and clean burning. Should be able to use about the same grs. as 4759. What do you guys think.

From what I can remember reading 110 works better but I have never used it can't find any around here

I think starting at 60grs is way too high. I say start at 55gr then take it up into the low 60's with the 4198.
