Well guys, all my parts came in to put my new project together (less optics) it started out as a Savage 516 Striker in 7mm-08. 14" with muzzle brake. I took the barrel off (for sale by the way) and bought a factory ML-II take off barrel off a member on 6br.com. I ordered a ML-I style breech plug from Pete at PA Machine Company. what an amazing job he did on it. stuck a factory vent liner it in yesterday. the barrel has been shortened to 15.825" so to be legal for NYS hunting regs. lubed up the plug and installed that in the barrel. screwed the barrel on the action last night. now the only thing is the brass and headspace. I have some once fired win 45 ACP brass that has been sized and fits the plug fine. I tightened the barrel against that for now to check things out. I also have some scrap 6BR brass that has been blown into 6BRX for my other striker. this can be shortened to fit also and by be more consistent being its Lapua stuff. uses a small rifle primer but should not have a problem with that with the powders I want to use. one thing I noticed with the win brass is the bolt was closing hard, I want that for sure but the rub mark in the web from the nipple of the plug is more one one side of the case than the other. and some times it would close stiff how i set it up and other times looser but not sloppy loose. I will try to cut some br brass down this weekend and snug everything up. pictures to come either today or this weekend.

As you know, you should use a faster burning powder and a smaller amt of it than our std 45 +/- loads. ? 4756, consider also Alliant 2400, appx 26-28gs, maybe more(was a std powder), others that are a little faster than VV-110.

you are correct. going to pick up some 5744 at bass pro in a little bit. going to start at 39gr with a 225-230 and go from there. not looking for a ton of speed out of this. expecting 44 RM like ballistics. should be able to let you know today or tomorrow. picks are uploading to my account now so ill be able to post them up also

I'd consider a more efficient velocity producer such as 4756 and AL 2400 as well as others. 5744 seems like it would be good but much experience has shown that velocity is it's major weak point. VV-105 might work very well.

I know what you are saying. for today its just a test run anyway. ive got all summer to work on this. going to be 150 yard max range anyway, and that is under ideal conditions.

Cool!!! I am wondering why you went with the ml1 type bp ? Primed cases easier to handle or better ignition ? I have a ml1 and like the modules. Nice build ,waiting to hear how it shoots for you good luck. Greenhorn

Did you try any small rifle magnum primers?

twoodard, I use CCI400 small rifle primers and they work very depedably in all but single digit temps. I suggest that you drill out the flash hole in your casings to 7/64". That did it for me.

Greenhorn I agree with you to a point I now have 20 modules to work with. But the cases may be a better way to go? Really nice and well thought out build. It may be possible to use large rifle primers or brass modified to use a 209 almost as the module with out some of the draw backs? Jon

the 45 ACP brass worked today with 5744 and 4227 so the LP primers will work for me. and with much less prep work. do not have my scope rail yet so just checked speed with each powder today
39 gr. 5744 MMP HPH12 250 FTX gave 1750 FPS with very manageable recoil. work it up during the accuracy testing
45 gr. 4227 same bullet and sabot gave 1950 FPS with stiff recoil but I could still deal with it. might drop it down two gains and work up during accuracy testing

If I'm not mistaken your working in b/p FPS ranges?

yes very similar. right on par with 460 S&W speed with the same weight bullet with the 4227. the 5744 may have it also with a little more. but I will not know the speed untill my new Chronograph comes in. my buddy was shooting through it today and a sabot, just the sabot decided to smash the screen. on the second or third shot. kinda weird but oh well. last year a buddy shot an arrow into my other one. guess they are only good for a year or so. or i need to find better friends

That pistol is soo cool. Ive been tinkering with the idea of making one for subs using a Knight DISC action. My dad has one of the very first Remington 221 Fireball pistols and 3 boxes of the original ammo. He bought it in the late 60s maybe early 70s and its still in mint condition.
VERY nicely done.!!!

you have to be careful. you cant just go and make a long gun into a handgun. that is a big no no. your need a action that is designated as a handgun or work with a action that is undesignated from the factory and the FFL does the paperwork to sell it as a handgun
