What about velocity from a Katahdin 20" 45-70 converted to smokeless......with losing 2" or so with the BP install, what could it max out at?

You wouldn't lose any velocity from the BP install, thats part of the chamber the cartridge would be in anyway. I had an Austin Halleck .45 cal. with a 20" barrel that did very well. Don't imagine youd lose but about 200 FPS vs. a 24"er.

Seiously....I don't know. Seems it would make a nice rifle if it would still have good proformance. Mine is fluted and seems it would be a good stiff barrel to use.

55gr of H4198 aproximately 2400fps with a saboted 200gr bullet according to the posts over on MM. Guy was using a slip-in plug made to the dimensions of a 45-70 case.

:)dcon 4227 would be a very good powder choice for short barreled .45's.

Hey dcon, that Katahdin barrel would make a sweet woods gun. I guarantee a deer would never notice any velocity loss.

Now you'r talkin dcon! I think there was a post some time back about a guy had a converted Katahdin. Might have been a 50. You might plug it in the search engine. It's sounding sweet! 10

I had a 21 inch pacnor and I had to watch the use of slower powders, velocity increase per grain went way down after 54 grains of 4198 and muzzle flash went through the roof,,, IE wasted powder and extra recoil. 54 grains 4198 shot very well though as did 30-32 grains 4759

dcon, I second dave d. A shorter tube would benefit from a little quicker powder and H4227 would be the best choice.

Ok, as a single it in a duplex. I'm mainly a hunter and want 100% ignition on cold days. What would work best with 4227?

:)straight 4227 and start at around 45grs and work up to a max of 50. Bring your chrony with you so you know what's going on. Can't wait to hear your results I have a shortie in mind.

My ears are still ringing from my 45 cal with a 24" barrel loaded with 62 grains of H4198. I used ear protection when ever I had a chance to during hunting season.

I bet,,, I'm sticking with 58 grains H4198 in my 26 inch Encore,, 2660fps is plenty for me with a 200 grain load,,,
