Shot my Slufoot Encore 45-70 again today, very impressive, to say the least! While last week I couldn't hit a barn door using 5477, this week with 50 grs. of H4198 it was outstanding! Thanx slufoot for the conv., thanks AL from Mi. for the Harvester sabots & bullets. They worked great! 5 shots, 1" groups. Gonna play some more and up it a little more & see what happens.
Thanx,

Thanx Dave, I was a little apprehensive after the bad showing last week. I couldn't fathom that using the wrong powder would make that big of a difference. I mean, I could barely hit paper with the 5744, and with no adjustments to anything, 1st shot with H4198 was 1" high & 2" left. So were the next 4 shots! Very impressed, and for a light gun, (5 3/4 lbs.) the recoil is very tolerable. thanx everyone for all the help. I am a believer in smokeless.
Now on to another project.

This stuff is GREAT to read ;D I know when I got my first smkless and went to the range I was not happy.... But after going custom .. WALA I went to the range got a 1' group out at 100 yds... then tightened it up and went 1.75 @ 200. ;D ;D ;D. Wait till you get it where you just know that bullet is gonna hit where you point it.... It will make ya dance!! Good Luck! Drop

What are your most accurate loads in your 45/70 encore conversion and your loading routine? I have one and would appreciate your input. I'm new to smokless. Wayles

That's great John, I felt confident your barrel would shoot once you found something it liked. One inch groups at 100 yards is very impressive, alot of centerfire rifles won't do that. Didn't you also change sabots from the ones that come with the SST's to the Harveter smooth blue?
GOOD SHOOTING! Slufoot

tar12 if it is an encore 45/70 conversion the twist is 1 in 20.

58 grains H4198 shoots great for me, raggedy one hole groups, with both the 200xtp and 195 barnes, bullets knurled and a smooth blue harvester sabot. Knurling the bullets tightened the groups considerably. Getting 2660 fps out of my 26 inch Encore,, for a plinking/low recoil load 31 grains 4759 also shoots well with the 200xtp

In my conversion I"m shooting PPoseys load of 31 gr of 4759 - smooth blue and 200 xtp. This year it was my rattlin-callin-rain huntin-creep n sneak gun. Shoots bugholes, shots touching at 100. Killed 3 deer with it. This spring gonna try some moderate loads of the 4198. It's a 24" barrel and really shoots the 4759 great. 10

Man o man I am as lost as a ball in high weeds. Now I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I am not the dullest either. I have been reading through most of the posts on here for the past 2 or 3 months and during that time I have decided to proceed with my first smokeless build. I planned my first build to be a smokeless Remington 700ML with a Pac-Nor barrel, but now I have a growing interest for a Encore 45-70 build. I am not totally following the Encore 45-70 build nor the total cost for such a build.
So, I need some help. Let me first try to explain what I think I know about an Encore 45-70 build and please correct me where I am incorrect. First, the obvious is one must have a Encore frame and I do have a stainless Pro Hunter frame. Secondly, a 45-70 Encore barrel to be converted. I assume an SS KATAHDIN PN 4804 will work? Or would a more standard 24" Encore barrel be better? Next, find someone to perform the conversation. I assume the conversation consists of boring the ID of the barrel to a specific depth and then threading the ID for the breech plug. Then comes the breech plug. Do I use a Savage breech plug? Thank in advance for the help.

Yes, you use the Savage BP & VL in the Encore barrel. Slufoot will do an excellent job for a reasonable price. PM him and he'll set you straight. He did mine, it turned out great!

I would not use a 20 inch barrel as you will limit yourself on powder and load choices, I had a 21 inch pacnor and was limited somewhat. Now I have a 26 inch converted encore and love the longer barrel as far as loads go,,, the 26 inch encore is still shorter than the ML2 with a 21 inch pacnor, I think the 24 inch encore would be best, you will still end up 5 inches shorter overall and lighter than a factory ml2 with a 24 inch barrel

I'm thinking of doing a short one and a long when.
Where's the best source for BPs at this time? Is there a good or better between the different ones in use?

I have unmodified Savage BPs (hex head) in all my guns( 2 .50s and 1 .45) and they are just fine. You can get them from Savage and I think Randy Wakeman ($32) has them too. Burned out my 4 Savage ventliners that came with the new gun and have Lehigh liners now and Wakeman has some that are longe life too.. 10
