Got to shoot the Encore .45-70 conv. today. Very impressive, for being so light, not much recoil. Fired a few rounds with 44 gr. of 5744, Hornady 200 gr. SST's, got it on paper, but didn't have time to do any serious groupings. We'll try it again today. Anyone have any pet loads for the .45?
Thank you Slufoot, loving it so far!

pposey, what sabots are you using with the Hornady SST's? I tried some today with the sabots that come with the SST's, started with 35 grs. of 5744, worked up to 44 grs, no good. No grouping whatsoever. Any suggestions?

bteague is right, get some smooth blue harvester sabots, (part # H4540B). I have never had any luck with the Hornady SST supplied sabots. Also try some 10mm 200gr Hornady XTP bullets in the Harvester sabots.
GOOD SHOOTING! Slufoot

Does anyone shoot N110 as their main load? I heard it is hard to come by, and I have access to some. Just wondering if its worth the effort.

Everyone who shoots smokeless ML's should have N110 on hand always (but can't get 4198 speeds as single in .45).....its versatility for load development is probably top of them all. Can do a lot of different things,,,,,,no doubt it can be used as single in either .45 or .50 but by using it as booster sky is about the limit for developing duplexes, and fast accurate ones at that.

No, for a .45 that was N120.
.45 load with N120 at 72gr is listed at 2900fps (too hot IMO).
.45 load with 4198 @ 62gr is good for at least 2600.
Just remember that his barrel is shorter I believe, longer barrels more speed.
I did not see a N110 single load listed for the .45

While getting good speeds that sharp of a pressure curve will probably test sabot strength.

That was my immediate thought as well, but I do plan to see if I can duplicate his efforts when my .45 is done. From what I understand, even at 50gr of N110 the speed is beating the H4198 at 62gr that many seem to report is the max for sabot disruption.

I've bumped H4198 up to 64g in cool (sub 50F) weather and shot right at 2800 fps. Sabots are starting to look stressed at this point but accuracy was still good. I think if one is wanting to go much faster than that, then duplex is the way to go. Lower pressure and easier on sabots in the limited testing I've done on loads in the 2800+ fps range.

What type of barrel are you using for this conversion. I have a friend that is interested but not sure I like the TC sporter 24 inch barrel.

Mine is the T/C Encore 45-70 24" blue barrel. Slufoot did the conversion with a Savage BP & VL. Really like the light weight, waiting for the proper components to get it zeroed.
