Looking for info on someone to convert a Contender 45/70 barrel to a smokeless ML. The reason I'm looking at this is to get a light weight and compact set up for my youngest son. I have yet to see any info on this conversion or if anyone makes a smokeless ML barrel for the original Contender.

And a Encore or handi rifle 45-70 conversion would be a great kids ML loaded with a light load of 4759,,, say 30 grains.

G2 Contender barrel 23" 45/70, can the chamber be threaded for a 209 breech plug? Was looking at my 223 barrels, 45 colt that I have, wondering if there was enough steel to thread.

I have 2 Encores and the frames alone are 1 lb heaver than the Contender. The Encore barrels are quite a bit heavier also, so I have ruled out the Encore. I also have several NEF's but I don't want to do an NEF.
My youngest is 7 and not a very big 7 year old at that, that is one reason I am looking at the Contender, the other I have 3 of them.
The G2 and the original Contender use the same barrels except the T/C ML barrels, I believe.

I made one on the original contender and on the g2 and on the encore. My son shot his first deer at 7.5 this year with a 45/70 contender. 25gr of 4227 200gr xtp moving at 1500fps.

Tried to call SMI, no answer was hoping to get a price on breech plug. From the pictures they look small, a socket would have to be turned down I am guessing to fit properly?

I emailed SMI and they don't do Contender barrels.

When you call, make sure you call the shop number, not the office number. Seems like those guys are never in the office I use an un-modified 7/16" socket to remove my SMI bp from their douglas barrel.

Did you ask them if they did a conversion or make one from a douglas blank? I had them make me a conversion with an extra long bp so that the bullet would stay above the original chamber. I know that they don't. Make one of there own for the contender.

The Contender frame is not as strong, I bet that is why they do not want to make it smokeless. Have seen some Contenders in black powder. If SMI would sell the breech plug only, could try to thread the chamber on a 45/70 barrel. 23" is all they offer factory barrels in, might be to short for smokeless. What bolt size would the breech plug be, anyone know? Think someone said two different sizes were being made.

In a ML, BP or smokeless the "frame" or "action" does not contain the pressure, only the barrel and breech plug. The MLII is considered a ML and can not be retrofitted for CF as there arn't lugs to hold the pressure generated on the bolt by CF. Same as the Encore or Contender action/frame isn't holding the pressure like in a CF, it's in the barrel and breechplug. 10

I don't have a 45/70 barrel to measure but I did measure 4 other Contender barrels I have which were .800, I would assume the 45/70 would be the same. The dd Bullberry barrels are using an Encore breech plug, which measure about .682 to the outside of the threads. I might be wrong but .118 doesn't seem like enough wall thickness to use the Encore breech plug. Does anyone know of a smaller breech plug I could use?

My Pro hunter frame w/ Encore 45-70 barrel, (blue) weighs less than 6 lbs. slufoot did the conversion using a stock Savage BP & VL. Very nice conversion, Shot it with 44 grs. of 5744, recoil was not bad at all. Much less then I expected for such a light gun. Ideal set up for youth.

.565 is the outside thread diamiter of my SMI plug,,
and the outside diamiter of my Encore 45/70 barrel at the plug is 1 inch
so that gives .2175 of steel left around the BP threads
I use a 1/4 inch socket set and it turns right out with no problem,, 7/16 th fits fine.

I emailed SMI again asking if they would install a longer version of their breech plug in my 45/70 barrel so the bullet would be above the chamber as rybo74 posted. The reply was 125.00 including shipping.
Problem solved!

Hi David, The load that I used for my son who was 7.5 was a 200xtp tan mmp 25 grains of 4227 with a ccim primer. 1500fps around 1 inch group at 100yards and did a great job on a doe at 80 yards. call me if you have any questions(603-765-9796
Also have them do something with the muzzle like a QLA so that it doesnt shave sabots

58 grains H4198 is shooting great for me with 200XTP and 195 barnes both slightly knurled,, Also 31 grains 4759 is an easy shooting load with the 200xtp,, bet 4759 and a 200xtp would work well on deer down to 1200-1300 fps easy
