Hunting season is over and it went well. A bunch of meat headed to Starlippers for processing. My load in the Encore 45-70 TC barrel conversion shot lights out but is a little below the full potential of the 45. I am getting great accuracy from the 31 gr of 4759 and 200 XTP in blue sabot. However if I shoot that bullet any hotter I'm afraid it will begin to "blow up" a bit too quick on close shots. Weather is cool and I'll be "wringing her out" in the next 3 months before it gets hot. It is a 24" barrel with a MLII breechplug so I have about 22" of barrel for powder burn. What are some of the loads you guys have that have worked well in Encore or other conversions? Please leave out the loads that have heavy recoil in heavy guns as this gun is light. Sure I shoot a 10 ga but it don't kick like a hot 338. Plan to try some sabotless so that is to be considered too. I haven't tried the sabotless in a SML yet so that is new for me. Have a nearby shooter with dies and knows how to knurl etc... and he has been and will be a big help. So what ya say on loads for higher level of performance for the conversions? Thanks all, 10

dcon, bteague had a considerably long search for his favorite load. If you do a search for the thread it will provide good insight into his trials and tribulations. Knowledge for when/if the same thing happens for you. Turns out his bullets were not gripping the sabot and picking up the spin necessary for accuracy. Knurling helps the bullet grip the sabot and pick up the spin of the rifleing and makes the sabot larger diameter which may be necessary as the 45-70 conversions have bores for .458 bullets not .451 or .452 bullets. For the larger bore you may need to knurl to have the proper fit. Knurling makes the bullet diameter bigger and bigger bullet makes the sabot bigger and bigger sabot fits a bigger bore. bteague, if I'm wrong about this please post the correct information. You're learnin. My Encore 45-70 likes 62 grains of H4198 with a knurled 195 Barnes. I knurled it for a better grip on the sabot not to increase the diameter.

58 grains H4198 is shooting well for me, have only measured 2 shots and they were doing 2645 and 2666 fps with the 200xtp
mine has a 26 inch barrel and a SMI plug
it's shooting 1-1.5 moa easy

10ga,Like tlsc i think it just gripped the sabot better. The force it took to load didnt seem to go up that much. But you are right about one thing. It was a long process.I don't think i would have figured it out without the help of this board.Billy
