Thinking here again. I have a new, never fire ml barrel for a Pro Hunter. If I had it modified for a smokeless NP of some sort, would it work with smokeless powder as well as using a 45/70 barrel?

No, can't use smokeless powder in a stock ml barrel. Use the 45-70 barrel, it'll work.

dcon, et al, Do not use ML barrels intended for black powder or substitutes for smokeless. Black powder and subs develope a LOT LESS pressure than smokeless powder, smokeless will develope 3X to 4X BP pressures. The question you pose is like someone saying I use 42 gr. of 4759 in my MLII, therefore I should be able to shoot 42 grains of Bullseye, NOT! The steel in ML barrels is different and more cheaply made than smokeless barrels. Why do you think so many of them are so cheap compared to smokeless guns? If you think what you propose is OK just contact the manufacturer and ask if they will honor the warranty if you alter the original equipment and use smokeless powder. If it were so easy don't you think TC would have a smokeless model available? The guys in this area who are shooting TCs are using Blackhorn 209 now and are very satisfied with the accuracy and power. Better safe than sorry. This ain't just $.02 worth either, it's worth your safety and life. I have only been present once (1) when there was a catastrophic gun failure and looking for body parts, hand and fingers, while they rush the victim to the ER is not anything I want to do again, and this involved a ML shooting real BP. Whenever I read about what you propose it just about ruins my day as some people don't listen to the good advice of people with experience. If you want a smokeless gun get a smokeless barrel converted at SMI, get an Encore barrel from Bulberry or SMI or sell the Pro Hunter and get a MLII, Bad Bull, Swinglock or get a New Englander or H&R and have SMI convert or build a smokeless barrel. Even buying a Bad Bull or Swinglock is cheaper than a stay in the hospital, and therapy, and prosthetics, and rehab, etc... Whenever or wherever guns are involved it's SAFETY FIRST, wheather cleaning, hunting, reloading, smithing, range shooting, or whatever, safety first. 10

So, your saying that T/C would use a different grade of SS for a ML barrel than they would for a 45/70 barrel? I don't know is why I'm asking?

Yes, They very well could use a different grade steel and different mfg process. Ask them and see what they say. OH YEAH, have 911 on your speed dial! 10

They could use a lower grade steel and save a few bucks on each barrel which would translate to alot of bucks overall, I have often wondered the same thing

They could use a lower grade steel and save a few bucks on each barrel which would translate to alot of bucks overall, I have often wondered the same thing I would think a big company like TC wouldn't use a different grade stainless and have a chance of it getting into their CF barrel line if they were all made in the same building, but a couple of $$ here and there adds up big overall as stated. But to be safe, I'd skip the idea and go with a barrel made for smokeless.

:oThere is a reason they say BP ONLY on those barrel's....It's not just a disclamer...Its a safety issue

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll just modify a 45/70 barrel at some point then. Or buy one from SMI. What is the cheapest way overall? Not counting the cost of the barrel to start with?
