I am seriously considering buying a smokeless barrel for my Encore and would like to know here form owners of and those knowledgeable of SMI Encore barrels what barrel length and twist rate should I get for both the .50 cal and .45 caliber. In other words is one rate of twist for a particular caliber better in any significant way?
I am strongly leaning to wards getting a .45 caliber barrel as a affordable way to get me a .45 smokeless ML.
Although I have not read any at all that I can recall, are there any quirk's or down sides to a SMI barrel for my Encore 209x50?
Lastly I have quite large amounts of H4198, RL-10X, N110,n120 and RL-7 and would like to know if these powders have a reputaion for excellent performance in a .45 cal SMI. As much as I would like to get a .45 SMI the barrrel is $110 more expencive than a .50 SMI and I do not want to have to go out and buy any new powders as I already have seven different powders now for my .50 10ML-II.
Thanks, Arthur.

4198/ 56-58 grns will work well in the 45 as will a n110/n120 duplex, the 45 will be 110 bucks easier on your shoulder. I would go 45 in a light gun like the encore.....Bill

I went 1:22 twist with my .50 douglas barrel. Shoots fantastic. Or was it 1:20. I can never remember, it's what everyone gets in the pacnor .45.

338: Will this be a paper gun or a hunt gun? If you plan to use it in a bunch of different areas, particularly out west, .45 MLs are not allowed in a lot of states. Got a 45 that I like a lot and it's OK here in VA, but when I go to hunt with my bro. in CO it is a no go in ML season. There it's 50 cal, open sights, BP or subs, no sabots and bullets no longet than 2X bore dia. Screwy! But in "rifle" season most anything goes. I have 7 smokey guns so it's just a different part of the arsenal. I know you probably have something to fit the regs wherever you go but just a consideration for this particular gun. Best, 10

Length limitation of 2x diameter was recently changed IIRC.

Good info so far. I already have a .50 cal 10ML-II so that would be my ML of choice for out west if such a need arrose. The .45 would be for staes like IN,and IL. Looking at it this way, I can get me a LT/WT ML for all day sneek and peek hunts that I can use untill my sons get old enough to hunt and then have a excellent light kicking deer rifle for them to use.

I think you are on the right track. Only thing about my conversion is the barrel length. another 2/4 in would give better burn of slower powders and only be oz heavier. This off season project is going to be a custom 45 barrel for the Encore in a 27-30 in length. Still light but more likely to yield full potential of the 45. I'm seriously looking at converting a 45+70 H&R buffalo classic. It has a 32" barrel and that would be interesting with smokeless and certainly a winner with real BP. 10

On lenght,, my encore with a 26 inch barrel is 1/2 inch shorter overall than my ml2 with a 21 inch barrel,,,
That buffalo classic would be a cool piece

Pposey. I would agree with you on the buffalo classic. Very interested in hearing if you decide to do it. I would think it would be great. Jon
