Some guys over on Speciality Pistols forums have been shortening the 700ML and putting it in an xp-100 stock.

I always thought you could cut down a ml II and then fashion one of the various thumbhole stocks into a pistol grip for it. My concern is the various regulations out there and would be afraid to try it in Michigan, without a serious regulatory review first. It is really quite easy to cut off a barrel and file the end, and do a rudimentary crown. Of course a well equiped gunsmith can do a better job, but most people are supprised at how nice a job you can do with basic tools.

Not sure of the BS involved getting it registered as a handgun if you chose to do so. If it started out as a Striker would be much simpler, but then the hassles of barrels and plugs, etc. I wouldn't be afraid to do a Encore, a Contender I'd keep the loading to the low ends thou.

Once a rifle, always a rifle unless your talking about a Contender or you have a 16 inch barrel. I don't think it matters if it was a ML rifle or not, but it might since ML's are considered primitive weapons. Now if you have a brand new rifle receiver that was never made into a rifle you can make a pistol with any length barrel. I just so happen to have several Swedish Mauser complete actions made by Husqvarna that have never been made into a rifle. ;D One day I might have to make a 6.5x55 pistol.

You can't start with a rifle receiver and cut it down to a pistol. Big ATF no-no.
I have a project I started to turn an old single shot break-action shotgun receiver into a blackpowder ML pistol. It has been shelved for sometime as I have not gotten around to calling the ATF and checking to see if the fact that I am turning it into a "non-firearm" BP weapon exempts it from the rule.
