I am planning to order my 45 cal Pac barrel for a Stevens build and want to know just how light I can go and still be safe, my age and physical condition is limiting me on weight. I shoot an Austin & Halleck and it's just to heavy to carry very far so the new one needs to be a couple pounds lighter.

If weight is a primary consideration you may want to consider a Encore conversion,

My theory is a light Palma contour which would be a bit heavier then a #5 but puts more meat in the critical area. The contour on the .45 700ML is pretty light but too light for heavier smokeless loads.
In a #5 contour your looking around 3.1lbs for a 26" .45 barrel for a Savage. Almost a pound more for a beefed up Palma contour.

I was leaning towards the Light Palma, and I fully agree about having more meat in the critical area.

I love reading all he posts on this sight but sometimes I become some what confused ( Of course that's nothing for me) Now I am confused as to the term Palma Rifle? Palma does this have anything to do with weight or size or is this a manufacturer name? I have read on the 6MM BR sight they refer to the Palma rifle quite a bit. I was under the impression the palma Rifle meant the maker of the barrel? (More confused now than before) DDDDAAAAA. Lou

Palma is a International shooting competition shot at 800, 900 and 1000yds. Dates back to like 1876 and is held every 4 years. Currently the rifle has to be a single shot with iron sights chambered in .308 and you can only shoot 155gr bullets. The rifle has to weigh 13.2lbs (6kg). Here in the US the NRA runs Palma matches but will stretch the rules to allow high power rifles and ammo that would not be allowed in International competition. Countries that are regulars are Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. The US team has won 13 of 27 official matches. The next match will be Oct 2011 in Australia.
The purpose of the Palma contour was to get a optimum stiffness for a long barrel and not make it muzzle heavy. That is why they are heavier in the breech end. Since they use iron sights most Palma rifles have like 30" barrels to get maximum sight radius.

Savage is actually making a Palma rifle with 30" barrel on the target action. I do not know if they are officially sponsoring the team or not. I was told some guys would be shooting Savages and there would be some tube guns. The USA team hasn't won since 1985 with only two 2nd place finishes since. It was weird Savage showed off the Palma at the 2008 SHOT show after the USA team got a stomping at the 2007 match. The team is composed of at least 16 shooters (usually 4-6 come from the military marksmanship units), plus 4 line coaches and other team members. There is a team trophy and a individual trophy. It would be nice if someone like ESPN would at least give a recap but a water dog event or dog show is more important.
