Seen three does and shot two of them. No bucks! Weather was very screwy though--full moon, rain,a lot of wind, etc. But, more importantly, each of my sons got deer and we had a good time in the field. Venison in the freezer, life is good. Mark

My daughter and I hunted the slug season here with our muzzle loaders. Opening day we used stands about 30 yards apart. I'm looking north and she is looking south. We were in and out a couple time and was out again for the evening stand. Heard a few distant shots quite a ways off. Then I heard a big bang behind me and I'm up looking at her and all over to see what she shot at. I get down and we talk and she says she shot at one but not sure where it went. She shoots T7 in a knight. Well we head over in the direction of the deer and she spots it DRT. A 7 pointer. We were thrilled to say the least. I really wanted to see her connect as its been a few years for her since she got one. I gutted it out while she went for the sled we pull it in with. Three days later I'm on the same stand and I connect with a fork. Ran about 30 yds and went down. I called her on the cell and said "Bring the sled". We filled out with two nice deer for the freezer. We hunt public land and trophy hunting really isn't practicle if you want venison to eat. In this area we are allowed one deer and it has to be a buck. She is a great hunting partner and started hunting deer when she decided my son and I were having too much fun to be left out. DH

Have had my best season ever...thats' saying a lot for 25-30 years of hunting. Only shot one buck in bow but passed on more 120 -130 class bucks then I ever have in gun. Our patience is paying off and we should have some very nice bucks next year in the 140+range. Now we have to hope for a low winter kill, hope the cars don't get too many...and of course, the poachers.
IMO poaching by real pro's is the biggest threat. IMO, they are everywhere and most of them are good at it and only go for the biggest bucks. It's not the guy who jumps out of his truck on the road and dumps his gun at a pack of deer on posted property (yes, that seems to happen every year somewhere close to us) It's the guy with no job, a .22, all the time in the world to scout the roads. With a light at 3:00am that no one will see, a gun making little noise, and days to retrieve the antlers.
Sad but true

The "Tar Family" has done well this season. We ended the general firearm season with 11. 8 for dad,2 for "Q" and one for Shania. I used the .45 all season."Q" used his 980 Ultra Slughunter in 20 ga. and Shania used her H&R .44 rem mag.We have 6 days of muzzy season left and will try to get a couple more . Shania has not got her buck yet so we will be setting on cornfields from here on out.

Killed a forkie the first day of the gun season then blanked in Wisconsin and at Atterbury, and at the park hunt and at Potaka lake. We haven't seen any deer on our hunting property since opening week end. Something tells me the herd has been reduced enough where we hunt. I probably won't deer hunt any more this year.

Shot 2 does with my AR15 in 6.8SPC. Missed a 6 point buck with my ML-II, misfire, but I have explained that in another thread. My 14 year old nephew shot a doe with his 98K 8mm. I was fun and we have 3 in the freezer. Good times.

The season this year was verry good with a nice 8pt., a one sided 6pt ( 4 on one side the other broken off with 2 pt remaining) One large buck that had already dropped his horns ( shot on a doe permit ) it had the udder of a doe and may have had some gene issues with dropping the horns so early, as most deer here in NY still have their horns. Then four does, total of 7 all with the 10ml11. My freezer full and some went for those who were in need. Years ago I shot a buck with the horns in velvet during November which had the genitals of both male and female. It was a huge deer as well.

My neighbor shot a doe in velvet one year. Someplace around I have a picture of it. It sure was nothing special, just his eyesight to see those little spikes.
I have never heard of or witnessed a hermaphrodite.

youp50 The one I shot years ago had a 4 point rack on one side and not much on the other. It was an exceptionally large deer as was the recent one from this year.

I am in the same boat as Wilms. I had the best season of my life, 41 years of deer hunting.
My Dad and I spent the first 4 days together. He has many health issues, so we were reduced to road hunting. There are many miles of two track gravel roads that traverse open to hunt land. Not my favorite way to go, but Dad enjoyed it and we both like to spend time together. He managed a spike with the WCE red dot set on high. "The third one has spikes, Pa. Can you see all three?"
Then I had several days to myself. We had some acorn this year and that draws deer for several miles. I never saw a good buck, but I managed to see a pile of deer. I really enjoyed the windy days, stalking about the oak ridges and spotting does and fawns in the bed.
There is no firearm taking of antlerless deer here.
My 15 year old step grandson turned up the day before Thanksgiving. We took some short hunting lessons and hit the woods. We were in the deer almost immediately. Does and fawns and then a forkhorn was spotted. We were near him for over 15 minutes until a shot was presented. I really enjoyed watching and listening to him get excited and start to pant only to calm down again. He took the bucks life cleanly at about 40 yards.
My daughter had killed a bear when she was living at home, but never a buck. She really doesn't like the cold. Friday after Thanksgiving found us in a pop up blind complete with a Mr Heater. Right at sundown we spotted another yearling buck making his way towards us. She took that one for the meat he was carrying.
On the QDM thing. I have respect for those that let them go and grow. I tried it and the bucks I watched and let go do not make it to 4 and a half. Winter and the Timbers take their toll. We have become a one man one buck camp. To us QDM means quality deer meat. Everyone knows that young bucks are superior table fare to those old ones anyway.

Exceptionally good considering my physical limitations. I killed a 130 lb. 6 point within 200 yds. of the truck.

So far 2 buttons(not on purpose), a 2 year old spike with 7 inch antlers, two doe and a 7 pt buck. Might do a little more hunting if I can find a job. Have two boys to take out for youth season and they are very anxious to kill. They get real excited when other people bag one and want their own experience. Most of my deer a given to people that need them. I kept 1 so far so I think one more for jerky and sausage will do me.

My group has gotten 10. I am at zero but still awaiting a particular buck. I have seen 66 on the few days I have been out but only two bucks (actually the same one twice and he was not much). Is the buck/doe ratio out of wack here or what? Of the 10 taken all were does but one.

I got 2 small bucks, and was happy with that. One was on opening day rifle, and one in late muzzleloader with my new T/C Omega. I got a late start on the season, missing most of bow, but it ended up really well, and the food is turning out decent too!

Rough to say the least. Didn't get to hunt as much as previous years due to starting a new job and other personal commitments. When I did get to go out I didn't see much. Opening weekend of Indiana shotgun season I passed on a couple of nice does thinking I'd get my chance later on. Finally shot a button buck the Saturday after Thanksgiving from a stand I hadn't hunted in a few years. 30 yd head shot. Then shot another button buck (thought it was a small doe) from about 140 yds the opening weekend of Indiana Muzzleloading season. High shoulder bang flop. I've never had a season where I've seen less deer per hour of hunting as I did this year. Many guys in my area of Indiana, (extreme North East corner), said the same thing. Still, I feel blessed that I've got some meat in the freezer.

I had a good season overall. I took a 7-point in archery season, back in October, and a huge doe with my Triumph 50-cal. I later took another doe with the inline and still later another doe. Yes, we have a lot of deer in some sectors of Western, Pa. In other areas where I had hunted black bear, I hunted 3-days without seeing a deer or bear! Have a great day! Dave

I'm a happy hunter thus far. I love handgun deer hunting. 9 point, 20" spread, 125 class buck and a nice size doe. Buck shot at 143 yards and doe taken at 60+. Both shoulder spine shots. My son, Jon, was ribbing me about the spine shots as most I take are spine. But I replied " No traking necessary for this old man". LOL My son & I still have 4 day ML season starting this Saturday.
