Is there any evidence of deer utilizing the protein left in gut piles where you hunt? We got a couple of bucks this year and the deer are eating all the organs except the lungs. I take the hearts out with me. They do not take the gut lining or intestines. We have a voluntary deer check and I asked the biologist there about it. He replied that a buddy of his puts game cameras on gut piles and gets many more deer eating than coyote/wolf/bobcat or fisher. I hope they do not figure out I have organs in me!

It must be those UP deer. My wife is from the UP and she has relatives in Eskie, we were up there for Thanksgiving. They feed the deer in their back yard all the time. They claim they eat everything including, left over beef steak, pork chops, etc. Now I know they are not bull shitting. I have seen their deer eat cookies, potato skins, dog food, hot dogs, and various other things but never meat or intestines .

That's wacky. I'm not sure if our deer have reached those desparate ways. But even people will eat each other to survive a tough time.

A long severe winter and deep snow. I would think nothing would be safe in order to survive.....

About 15 years ago I shot a buck and opened its gut to see what/where it was eating. The pile stayed there for a couple of days and then a deer came up and ate the contents of the paunch. I reported that to a couple of friends and one said he had seen that before.
This year is the first I have noticed them eating the guts, mountain oysters and all. The next time I find a road kill wolf I think I should take it out there and open it up. Maybe those old does will figure out wolves are full of organs. It does offer interesting possibilities.

Hmm I wonder if one shoots a deer on opening day and leaves the gut pile right near your deer stand if you could then use it as bait pile and shoot another? If so would that be considered illegal baiting? LOL
