Guys, I just picked up a Savage ML-II that does not have the accutrigger. It is Stainless with the laminated stock and I got it for $325 (what I thought was a great price). I have never had a smokeless ML before and was wondering what are some good loads and bullets and sabots to try. Also, is there anything a new guy should know about loading, cleaning, maintenance, etc.
Finally, will any of the Savage replacement triggers work on this gun? Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance for your help.
Brad

first off, congratz on the purchase. i will highly recomend reading the tips and hints on the top of this board. it will help you with most if not all of your current questions. dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=smokeless&action=display&thread=51 I am going to assume you purchased it used. if you have i recomend you make sure you can get breech plug and ventliner out and give it all a good cleaning. also take a bullet and sabot and push it down the barrel while the breech plug is out and after you cleaned it and try to feel that it goes down smoothly and there are no "loose" fitting spots. welcome to the board and ask away with any questions.

I put a Timney trigger on my first 10ML-II several years ago, and it's still killing deer for a good friend of mine. I was very pleased with the Timney trigger.

My pre accu trigger really likes 42 grains of 4759 pushing a 250 gr xtp in a mmp sabot. Easy on the shoulder, (which might be one of the reasons I really like it) if I go any higher than that to maintain accuracy I need to go to a 300 .458 bullet in a harvester crushed rib sabot. Really great price, just curious does it have a qla, it should have. I replaced my original trigger with a timney also.

Thanks guys. I am trying to decide on some loads to try out. I have several of the Hornady 250 SST's and some Barnes tipped ML bullets that I used in my Encore. Is there any special powder to try with these? Even if they don't shoot too well, it will give me some range time with the new gun.
I thought the price was very good as well. It also included Leupold bases and rings and a Bushnell Trophy scope. The scope aint the best, but it will work on one of my rimfires.
Thanks

Fabulous deal with the scope and mounts. As others have suggested, I would start with Savage recommended powders and loads. Sabot fit and toughness are critical for smokeless shooting. Unless I am mistaken, the Savage factory test load is a Hornady 250 gr XTP with 42 gr IMR-4759, and the MMP short black sabot. Part # 50045. The SSTs may shoot as well for you with the same load. Your Barnes tipped bullets probably measure .451, and may need some knurling for a good fit. If they are boat tailed, you may find it hard to get good accuracy. Several on this board have reported reasonable success using the supplied yellow, or blue, sabots with relatively mild to medium loads.
Definitely important to read the "Tips And Hints" section! Lots of info that will help lessen the learning curve, and frustration level, for a beginner smokeless shooter. Possibly the #1 tip is: Wait 10-15 minutes between shots to let the barrel cool. Warm sabots = bad news!
As for an aftermarket trigger, I really like my Rifle Basix version, but I have the Accu-trigger rifle. I am thinking that it works for both Accu and Non, but best to check their www page to be certain. The price was around $85.00.
Welcome to the board. Members here were beyond helpful for me. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't accidentally stumbled upon it. Boarhog
