I've been dying to see the results on a deer since switching to the barnes 250tmz. The results are one very dead deer but am disappointed because I didnt get to inspect the bullets mushroom shape and weight retention. The shot was slightly quartering to me at 205 yards and the load was 45 grains sr4759(plastic jug) and 250tmz at around 2300-2350fps.It entered right behind the shoulder and exited through opposite flank.Don't think for a second that I'm not happy with the performance I was just anxious to see the bullet after switching from SST's with which were fragmenting horribly. 21 inches outside and scored 140 I'm happy!

You won't get to recover many Barnes bullets from deer. They exit most of the time.

Thanks Dave. Since Savage has ceased production I've about decided to go with a Remington build for my pacnor .45 that we talked about. I will have plenty of time after season. Thanks again. Tim

congratulations on a fine looking buck. Barnes TMZ are an excellent bullet bullet, with deep penetration. Good Luck, Marty

Nice buck and great shootin'!! Haven't recovered more than a petal from any Barnes bullet since I started using them four seasons ago. Guess if we want to recover them, it's time to invest in metal detectors!

Congrats on the Buck! I dropped the SST's for the same reason as you-frag's. Luv the Barnes! ;D Thanks for sharin & good luck recovering one of those Barnes bullets.

Thanks guys. I switched very late just before season but the accuracy was good enough right off the bat that i felt comfortable with the decision. I switched from 69 gr. 4198 with SST's to 45 gr. of 4759 to lesson the recoil but mainly to keep from having bullet failure. Probably could go back to 4198 with the Barnes. I'm gonna build a .45 pacnor and hope to shoot the 195 grain Barnes. Any idea how fast I can push them and keep the recoil in the same range as the 45 grains of 4759 load? Thanks Tim

I agree that the Barnes is an excellent choice over the "250" SST but please don't lump the 200 and 300SST in with the 250 as they are much tougher. The Barnes terminal performance is hard to even equal. Very nice deer and long range shot. I think your bullet and load choice are excellent.

Nice shootin' and great buck Trbo! I would say that if you kept the speed of the 195 MZ's in the mid 2700's you would probably mimic your other load as far as recoil. Richard

Thanks Richard. That would be a pretty flat shooting combo. I use a dial and shoot combo with a turret from Kenton industries with a Leupold Mark 4 scope and it is deadly when used with a good range finder. I'm not one for gadgets or gimics but this setup really works great. With the slower 4759 load it rainbows pretty good at 300 yards. A 195 grain at 2700 should flatten that out a bit.

FWIW trbo, I have around a dozen or so EA of the 250 and 290 grain TMZs I recovered from the sand that comprises my ranges back stop and they all look like near exact copies of one another. Typically 100% intact text book mushrooms with retaining around 95-98% of their original weight. I shoot the 250s at around 26-2650fps and the 290s at around 2400-2450+ fps.
So IMHO, I STRONGLY doubt you can shoot a TMZ fast enough to get it to fail in a manner similar to a traditional copper clad lead core bullet.
I have a few questions for you tbro, if you would. Do you knurl your 250 TMZs or not, and if you do, to what size do you knurl them up to? I typically knurl mine up from a factory original OD of .4515 to BTWN .4535" and .454". I am I guessing correctly you are using the Barnes factory supplied sabot as well?
Thanks, and congrats on a supper nice buck, If mine, he would be occupying a place of honor on my wall in a full shoulder mount. Arthur.

Artjr, no i do not knurl them as I switched at the last minute before season. Temps were in the mid 90's right up til then. And yes I use the factory supplied sabot.
