I have to re-site my Savage to tone it down for my 69yr old dad to use but may be only able to shoot it at 50yds. Our season starts Saturday and I was wondering if I can only sight it in at 50 how should it be set up. I will be using 42gr 4759 and 250gr xtp or 260gr Scorpions at a max needed range of 150yds.

42 grains isn't really toned down that much, I hunted with 40 grains 4759 and a 250sst this year,,,, I'd go 1 inch high at 50, 2 inches high at 50 has that sucker climbing pretty fast,,, I set all my center fires/mls 1 inch high at 75-100 yards and they are only .5-.75 high at 50..

When I say toned down I mean from the 65gr of RL7 and 300gr Remiingtons. That load combination was very harsh and he could only shoot it once.

I have not shot the 4759 below what you mentioned but I have shot 5744 and N110 below this.36-38 grns is mild to shoot and will kill deer with no problems at the ranges you mentioned. My daughter has killed 4 deer the last 2 years using 38 grns of 5744.It will be pleasant for him to shoot.

3 of my friends shoot 40gr 5744 and 300gr xtp's exclusively with great results. I was the oonly one who gets on this board and learned about other powders and loads and had to be different.
