Mine was 4.5-almost6 inches so I marked 5-6 inches, two full loads stacked

I never measured the distance of the bulge from the breech, but it was about 1/2" behind the rear sight. I loaded a second complete load of powder, sabot and bullet on top of a load. BH

Pposey Okay I’ll confess again. ;D Complete double load was unintentionally fired. Picture below even though not the best you can still seen the peening/flattening of a few lands. No external indications found. Ed

I would say my stupid mistake occurred about 4 to 6" from the breech end. I stuffed another full charge, sabot and bullet on top of the existing load. I kind of think this is the cause for probably 98% of bulged barrels.

I think your right, I almost doubled up one once. I painted a white ring around my ram rod for reference and noticed it wasn't down to the mark. Took the plug out and sure enough double stack. It's easy to forget during a practice sesson, especialy when theres more than one person there. You get to BS'n and the next thing you double one up or forget to remove your ramrod from the barrel. My buddy says it kicks like a mother when that happens.

The reason I want to know this is to see how far out I need the barrel full sized before it tapers in a light weight profile

Like Richard said, double load, had two holes in the target to prove it. Anybody want a .50" SS barrel really cheap?

It seems that I canb see marks in the lands as well,,, what did you do with that barrel ET.? At that time I didn't really know what to do with that 50 barrel because it was already shortened from removing the QLA. If I had a machinist remove that part of the barrel then I would have been under the legal length of 18". So the optimum choice was too replace it. A machinist friend asked if he could have my damaged barrel and a used breech plug. Not a 100% sure of what he actually did with it but he did somehow fit it to another, different reciever and uses it today. Sorry I don't have additional details. Ed

1) 10-ML(not ML-2) within 4". Too large a ventliner hole and Ltl Gn powder got into module which caused to to rupture and a huge flash was sent into the main charge of Ltl Gn powder(49.5g 250XTP).
2)50 cal SMI - double load of 300SST and 72g 2015 so actually 72g 2015 pushing 672g projectile. Within 4" also.

My 50 MLII bulged barrel is slightly bulged down towards the bottom of the barrel, maybe 1.5" to 2" from the bottom. It's not bad but it's noticeable. Double powder and bullets (40gr. of 5744, BCR, 300 gr. .458 XTP times 2) and the external portion of the barrel seems fine. Maybe I'm crazy but my practice groups seem to be better with the bulged barrel. I'm leaving it as is.

My SS .50 caliber barrel arrived bulged from Savage; I no longer remember exactly at what point.
