This is a new MLII Lam/SS Been a long time since I have seen that anyone was using IMR4227. I experienced misfires with this powder when shooting 250 gr projectiles. At one time it was one of Savage's recommended powders but was removed because of the misfire situation. It might be ok with 300 grainers but I would be reluctant to depend on it using 250 grain bullets. Just a FYI. Doug

Panhandle
Excellent suggestive post. My preference and most accurate load has been using 43gr 4759(metal can), trimmed black Harvester Sabot, 250SW bullet with Cheddite primer, velocity 2300fps. If using 4759 from plastic jug then 45grs is necessary. Set to hit 1-3/4” high at 100yds, zero at 150yds & will hit (confirmed) 4-1/2” low at 200yds. Energy at 200yds is 1352 ft-lbs according to Point Blank Calculator.

Am taking the new Cutting Edge Air Bender, a Savage Weather Warrior rebarreled with a McGowen .358 BFG custom barrel, It is set up as an Indiana PCR, reformed 25wssm brass, 200 grain Barnes TSX, 47 grains Benchmark, Rem 9 1/2 primer, 2640 f/s, 1 inch at 200 yards. My 45 PacNor/Savage using a Barnes 200 grain expander, 60 grains H-4198, CCI 209m primer, and Harvestor smooth blue sabot, 2600 f/s, also 1 inch at 200 yards. NULA 50, 38-42 grains VVN-110, 250 grain Parker Hydrocon or 250 Barnes EX. CCI 209m, MMP 12 or 24 sabot. This one still in the testing stage. 3.5X10 Leupolds on the Savages with quick release Leupold extension rings and 1.5X6X40 Nikon Monarch Gold on the NULA. I am retired now and should be able to hunt a little more. Have to have good equipment as I don't get many chances to take deer.

I shot 4227 when first started with MLII 7-8 years ago. Still know alot of guys that shoot it. To my knowledge none of us has ever had a misfire. Here in the southeast tho its normally pretty mild weather. Also use the CCIM primers. This load shoots very well and should serve Pops pretty well with the mild recoil.

For MZ Season, I'm taking "The Hammer."
*Savage 10ML II with 26" 45 PCNR Barrel *Limbsaver recoil pad *Tupperware stock with about 1.5#'s of devcon alumincon epoxy to stiffen'er up. *Sightron S-II 3-10x42 *200gr SST with a light knurl, 60gr H4198, smooth light blue harvester, somewhere around 2600FPS
For shotgun season, I'll use the MZ some, but I'll also use my Ithaca DS II in 20ga *25" Barrel *Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5-6x42 *2 3/4" Rem accutip slugs. *Consistently 3" groups or better at 100 yards
For the late rifle season we have here in Iowa (does only), I'm going to use my Dedicated Technologies 7mm-08 AR-10 *20" Fluted and Comped Shilen barrel *JP Modular Handgaurd *Haven't settled on a load for that yet, but probably 120gr Noster ballistic tips.

Have the MLII with 42 gr 4759, orange MMP, 300 gr. .458 barnes "flatnose" (hollowpoint) 45-70 bullet, pentax gamemaster scope, camo tupperware stock with JB weld bedded, barrel lapped with comet, bagged 2 WT with it last year
Regular gun n hound season have a new to me Browning Gold 10 ga and handloaded 0 buck carrying 24 pellets.
If things work out I'll have the second MLII rebarreled and my Encore conversion tuned.
If necessary I'll go back to my Cabelas .58 Hawken and 100 gr of FF Swiss pushing a 280 grain patched roundball for ML and the 870 for shotgun.
Oct. 30 is opening day of ML season and I'm anxious. 10

I'm starting off with the Horton Crossbow for stick and string season.
For muzzle loader the 10ml2 with original barrel, burris FF2, rifle basix trigger, shooting 300gr sierra bullet in harvester rcr sabot, 68gr of h4198, and a fed 209a.
Depending on where I hunt in gun season it will be a marlin 512 with a 2x7 shotgun scope, a savage 110 243 set up very similar to the ml2, or a howa 1500 in 300wm with a zeiss conquest. The ruger bh in 44mag is coming along on all of the hunts in gun season.

Time is running out to settle on loads, but I will definitely be hunting with one of my Savage MLs most of the time. 1. Savage ML10-2, 45 cal 24" Pac-Nor barrel, Rifle Basix trigger, Duramax stock bedded and 3rd pillard by Richard, Weaver steel bases, Burris rings, and Vortex Viper 6-20X50 BDC scope. The load will most likely a 195 gr Barnes in a Harvester smooth blue sabot, sitting on straight 62 gr VV N-120, 62 gr H-4198, or a duplex of N-110/n-120, N-130, or H-322. I'll need to get the load settled in the next 2-3 weekends.
2. Savage ML10-2 factory 50 cal, Boyd's Ross Featherweight Thumbhole stock, pillared and bedded by me, Weaver rings and bases, Nikon Omega 3-9X scope. The load will probably be a Barnes 300 gr Original, Harvester Black CR sabot, over 44 gr A-5744. I have also had pretty fair hunting accuracy with a few duplexes. 10/60 N-110/N-120, 10/60 N-110/R-7, and 10/62 4759/10X.
3. Savage ML10-2 factory 50 cal thumbhole, (have not had time to bed and 3rd pillar) Weaver bases and rings, Weaver Classic Extreme 2-10X56 scope. I have not shot this one enough yet to make a load decision, but have had fair groups with 250 gr XTP, MMP SB sabot, and 10/58 N-110/H-4198, or 10/60 N-110/R-7.
I also will probably be carrying my sweet little Ruger 44 Carbine when hunting some of my thicket stands.
One thing I plan NOT to do this year, is pass up dozens of shots at old does, and small but legal bucks, until late in the season. By then, even the yearlings are spooked enough to sleep all day and feed only during the darkest part of night, and I have to hunt extra hard to get enough venison for cold Winter's chili and stews! Plain ol' black on black Original 10ML, 10 gr 4759 and 56 grains H322 under a 225 gr. FTX in a yellow TC superglide sabot. odd combination it seems but three shots touching at 100 yards. 2375 fps.
Modern rifle will be
1. Savage 111 Long Range Hunter 6.5-284 130gr. Berger VLD over 51.8 gr. Reloader 17 and a Fed 215 primer. 3200 FPS
2. Steyr 6.5x55 prohunter mountain stainless. 120 gr. Sierra Prohunter over 47 gr. H4350 and the customary Fed 21. 2850 FPS
3. T/C Encore 45/70 500 grain (yep, 500) round nose sierra soft point. 46.5 grains of IMR 4198. 1850 FPS.

I shot 48grs of 4227 with the 250XTPs with no misfires, but I switched to 4759 because it was more accurate and seemed to burn cleaner? Anyway to answer the post title: Pre Accu-trigger 50 cal Blue Synthetic Burris Fullfield II 3x9x50mm with B-Plex(works great to 200yds) 44grs 4759 250 XTP MMP short sabot Fed 209A primers My gun shoots this load sub-moa at 100yds and is bad medicine for the tick toters.

At this point in time, our Zone HAS NOT confirmed a rifle season. However, last year they announced that bear was open a week before it started. If we go rifle, I will take an afternoon to get my .243 ready...probably with some factory loads as I have not had time to develop...or make a large batch..... of ammo. All my reloading gear is still packed in a box from when I moved last year. The .243 is a Rem 700, lami stock, 26" bull barrel with a VXIII 6.5 x 20. It's set up for woodchucks but should make a great choice for our longer range stands. Probably would use 100 gr partitions.
Other wise it will be my "Ugly Betty" Savage .50. Load is yet to be determined but may be a book charge of 4759 behind a 250 Barnes TMZ in a supplied sabot. Not sure
I also have the other Savage I bought from Ozark a few years ago. That gun is ready to go with a super light charge (30 gr of 4759) and 330 gr hard casts. This gun/load hit 4 home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning last year on some dopey does. (That's what they looked like after I hit them...dopey)
2 weeks from today it will be the start of 5 weekends of bow season using my Hoyt Cybertec and Montec G5's. Will be spending this weekend and next finishing up remaining tree stand details. Made huge progress last few weekends and we are ready to go. 20+ good stands with choices for any wind direction. There have been 2 sightings of shooter bucks. Both by chance since we do not scout around. Hunting the same few 1000 acres for 20 years has its benefits and when the rut begins, hunt for where the does are and you'll find the bucks.
Getting the tingles thinking about it all.........

I will be using the fail proof BO ;D in my Savage this year, last year had two 300 Rems fail to exit at 2500fps, both very "deadeer" of course, but one with little blood on the death run. I used the BO on the last deer, and you know the rest of the story, sooooo... BO, BCR, 5/65 duplex N110-H4198, CCIM, 2480fps, very nice. Also using an Encore rifle in 357 Maximum, 24" heavy barrel, 180gr Hdy SSP and/or 200gr FTX, 2240 fps, light recoil, fun to shoot. Very accurate! Also Encore pistol in 260 Rem, 17.5" barrel, 120 Nos BT at 2740fps, has accounted for approx. 30 deer so far, out to 326 yds. Very accurate too! Good luck to everyone. Be safe. Jay

My son's stock 50 : 35 gr of N110, 200XTP in a Harvester sabot, Fed 210 Primer, about 1900fps. Yet to shoot a deer with this load first year of use. My gun 45 PacNor, CCI 209M, 11/49 duplex of N110/322, 200SST in light blue Harvester sabot, about 2600fps. I shot the same load last year only with the 195 Barnes with good results. Just though I would try the SST this year per RB recommendation. Both the SST and Barns shot sub in this gun with this load. About 1.5" high at 100 and 3" low at 200.

Need o add the .308 Model 100 to the lot. 180 grain round nose over 43.3 grains (shot in the dark, first load tried, worked perfect) of RL15. only 2450 fps but 1/2-3/4 inch groups at 100 yards. This old gun is accurate with almost anything if pushed by RL15.
T/C Black Diamond Super 45xr with 3 pyro pellots and a 150 grain knight/barnes copper HP of some sort with accompanying sabot. It shoots 1 inch groups at 100 yards and drops deer DRT every time I have put it to the test. Been shooting this combo for the past 9 years no need to change anything now.
Danny Thompkins/Lost creek gun works custom 54 caliber underhammer that was the first gun of any variety I ever bought for myself when I was 13. The very last one he ever built with a half round half octagon barrel. With this it is always 90 grains of pyrodex and 300 grain .451 XTP in one of those breakaway sabots from way back, held together by a yellow fiber wad.
Now for you feller Arkinsawyers NO I most likely will not kill a deer with every one of these, but I hate to decide I wish I could hunt with that ____________ but I don't have a load ready. Also I always have a buddy or guest who needs something to hunt with, so I keep extras on hand and ready to go. I never hunt with my .243, and will not behunting the .300 win mag this year. I should hunt the .300 though come to think of it. I have taken it to the woods 9 times in the past 17 years, wow feels odd to say I have had it that long, seems like yesterday, and have killed 7 deer with it, three were decent bucks. In fact I may go load some ammo and mount the scope back on it when I get home in the morning. If so, 180 interlock SPBT and 76.5 grains of RL 22 with a Fed 215 primer.
Am I the only one here not completely convinced of tthe real benefit of plastic tipped bullets. This gun shoots 1 hole groups with those regular interlocks, and when I say one hole I mean 1 perfectly symetrical, perfectly round bullet hole where I have at times put up to 7 consecutive rounds into before I had a flyer. but I usually keep it to three.

Well I am gonna use my Marlin 1894 in 44 mag. Wild West trigger in it breaks at 2.5 lbs and have a Zeiss Conquest on it 3.5x10. Gotta another 44 just like it in SS with a Bushnell Elite 4200 for my boy but I might take it out if he is not around. Also might try to get one with my Ruger Stainless Super Blackhawk but it is a shorty 4 5/8 ths barrel and iron sights. And who knows, when we start driving and swapping guns based on the tactical situation, I might be holding a Savage MLII 50 cal, or a Benelli shotgun or my old 870. If Indiana would ever get it's head right I could give up the Armory and would just use an AR-10 in 243 for any and all, well maybe
