I know I don't post here much anymore but I got a phone call today from my buddy out east. Several years ago I set him up a 50 cal 10MLII, Laminate/SS with a Bushnell Elite 4200 2x7 scope. I set it up with a Barnes 300 gr Semi Spitzer Original, 60 grs N120 and a MMP orange sabot with a MV of just under 2300fps. Last year I switched it over to Harvestor crush rib sabots. This gun has never been bedded or 3r pillared or anything. Some of you old timers here might recall I commented that this particular rifle was the most accurate out of the box Savage I had ever set up. Initially I sighted it in dead on at 200 yds which made it hit 3.5 inches high at 100 and 18 inches low at 300 yds. Last year when I swapped sabots I changed the zero to a dead on zero of 175 yds as my buddy was certain he would never attempt a deer at much past 200 anyway. Well today he calls me up and says he was at a private range and had shot 2 groups at 100 yds that were decent and then the range owner spotted a squirrel. They lasered the distance at 267 yds. My buddy gave the rifle to the range owner and showed him the ballistic chart I had taped to the stock. With a little careful guesswork, the range owner proceeded to kill the squirrel with one shot at 267 yards. Of course my buddy had to call me to tell me about it and also to tell me he had given my phone number to 2 very impressed shooters who wanted to set themselves up with new Savages. I dont know if even Tar-12 can beat that one! ;D

I hope he head shot it. Those 300 gr bullets might be a little tough on squirrel backstraps or hind quarters ;D.

Oh now come on. From what I've heard those out of the box 50's don't shoot worth a hoot. ;D He'll be telling that story for a long time for sure. Good to hear from you Rifleman.

Thanks guys! I was kinda thinking if I should post this or not as it does seem kinda nutty, but I do believe them as I am good friends with 2 of the 3 men that were present at the time. That rifle always did shoot great and if I had kept it instead of giving it to my friend I might still be shooting the 10mlII in spite of my neck problems. It really is a special rifle. I do think though that that particular squirrel was really one unlucky guy, as we all know there is little chance anyone could pull off a shot like that twice in a row. Nice to hear from all of my friends to. You guys that have my number feel free to give me a ring some time.

Rifleman, good to hear from you my friend! Do you know if this was a broadside shot, quartering, head on, or the Texas heart shot?

I have no idea Craig, but I would bet it was offhand, running, in the head, with a 45 mph crosswind in a few more days.

What's the point, Dwight? Like, was that supposed to be a hard shot?

Well I suppose Harley to guys like you and me, it would hardly be worth mentioning, but it seems I have left out one very important detail. The shooter in this case was actually a 12 year old girl from Burma who just recently had a complete head transplant. That in of itself is not so remarkable, as we all know the quality of the 10mlII guarentees hits about 99 percent of the time, however this particular shot was fired with a certain lack of ambition, and most likely in any other venue would have been considered an accidental discharge.

Dwight, that mention of the girl from Burma reminds me of a similar incident: A few years ago I commissioned Kenny Jarrett of S.C. to build a 7MM-08 A.I. . When it was finished I went to his shop to fire it before taking delivery. I had recently had ear surgery and had bright red scars behind both ears. As I settled on the shooting bench, Kenny, who was standing behind me, asked what the heck had happened to me. Without looking up, I said, "Well, Kenny, this isn't my original head." Probably for the only time in his life, Kenny had no reply. Harley

Does that mean you get to pick a new head, I'd settle for the one, head and body I had at age 30-50, I seen to have lost it along the way. Reward $1.53 to the finder.
