Maybe Joe can clarify but you can find some blue 10ML-IIs with SNs below M010000. It almost seems to me that they started the production run of SS ML10-IIs at M010000 and kept the number going from that point. With a SN of M010587, my rifle (which supposedly was from the first production run of SS) was just a few slots away. With that SN it was probly made in fall of 2000, It would be a non-Accutrigger flat-top receiver (Accutrigger came in 2003), you would have a synthetic stock (laminate stocks were not offered till late 2001/early2002), plain iron sights (fiber optics started appearing fall 2001) and you would have the QLA in the end of the barrel (which was discontinued about the same time as the fiber optic sights were added).
The tricky stuff is best left to those who are highly experienced in operating at the ragged edge of stability and sanity.
I've only seen a handful of SS below M010000 and I do not know if it was because the numbers were already on the books or what. I bought my SS in Dec 00 and I have a SN of M010528. Someone told me that Savage never throws anything away if it can be reworked. If they screw up rifling a .223 barrel they just redo as a .30. If they screw up a .223 chamber they just recut it as 22-250. If they screw up a centerfire receiver they redo it as a shotgun or WSM model if possible.
The original Savage trigger can be made into a decent hunting trigger. A lot of guys go overboard and screw them up.

I will get to see it this weekend and may buy it if it is cheap enough. I was afraid it was one that used the modules and would not have been that interested in it....Thanks
If you can get it cheap and the barrel isn't bulged someone may jump on it here on the board. I keep hoping to run across one with a bulged barrel I can get for $200 or less. Even if it was a ML10-I at $250 or less it would make a decent project gun. There are some bench guys looking for 10ML-Is to turn back into centerfires. Supposedly the action weighs a lot less the the new target action and you put a third pillar on it and trick it out it is a pretty competitive econo shooter.
A friend of mine seen a SS flat top ML10-II for $600 and asked me if that was a deal. I told him that was a little high and he said he thought it was too and passed on it, then he told me it came with a 3-9X40 VX-II and a box of goodies (including almost a full box of BOs). If you get $400 worth of accessories, yes it would be worth $600.
Look for a bulged barrel and look and see if the QLA is real crooked. Mine is a couple of thousandth off and doesn't effect accuracy (at least when I shoot bad I have an excuse to use).

If my rifle was originally screw up. than made right, they ought to do it to every rifle, out of the box it was a great shooter, with Hornady 250 and 300 XTP, and book loads ;D
I have three MLIIs. Two bought used very reasonably. The two stainless models have numbers M017470 and M011401. The blued one is early, M008305. All have SharpShooterSupply triggers and updrades so they all shoot well. A .50, .40 and .38 now.
Joe does a great job taking care of Savage shooters. I would feel bad asking Joe to take care of a possible operator screw-up. If I was the original owner and there was a possibility I didn't do anything wrong that is one thing. For me to shoot my ramrod or double load it and ask for them to warranty it I would feel I was taking advantage of Joe and Savage. Joe has gone above and beyond for people and I will be a loyal Savage customer because of it.
Besides I would be looking for a project gun and the barrel is not important except it might let me get the rifle for next to nothing if it was bulged.

The gun was an SS that had severe water staining on the receiver. It sold for over 1000.00 at the auction today. I guess I am missing something or two idiots butted heads today. I have a lot nicer gun with a good scope that I would take 800.00 for in a second and feel like I was ripping someone off at that price by 150.00.
People can go nutts at auctions. I went to a farm auction once where I watched a Dentist pay more for rusted out cattle head gates, and such, than he would pay for new stuff at Farmer's Supply. He also paid over $100.00 for a rusted out wheel barrow, that had a flat tire, than I bought new for $59.95 at Home Depot.
I also attended a Game and Fish auction, in Little Rock, where they sold worn equipment as well as guns, bows, nets, boats, and vehicles confiscated from game law breakers. They had a really nice Weatherby Lazermark rifle, with special engraving, and a Zeiss scope. Some guy opened the bidding with $3500.00, and that was pretty much that! He later told some of us that he was there for a friend, with instructions to buy that rifle, regardless of price. It seems the friend's wife had given it to him for Christmas, with special custom personalized engraving. He didn't want her to learn that it had been confiscated after he stupidly shot a hole in the Mechanical Bambie they use to catch night hunters!! I thought that was pretty funny, and that he got off easy! They could have taken his brand new truck, along with the rifle. Just what he deserved!
