Felt or fiber,,, another random thought I had while cleaning the ML2 yesterday,,,,,, seems it could help with using faster powders to protect the sabot on the initial launch

And those that are,,, is it to keep a hotter load from blowing the sabot? I have seen wads listed over on the Richards loads thread,,,

Some loads with the 195BX necessitated the use of a wad to keep the sabot from blowing, may have been the radiused base on the bullet though since others had some problems with the same bullet . I used veggies but preferred not using them since they lodged side ways up in the sabot base either when compressing the load or on ignition. Don't know if it has any effect on accuracy, just bothered me.

I wondered as well how the veggie wad handled being crammed into the cupped end of the sabot.

If you look at my posting for a week ago you will see I tried the .060" veggie with a blue Harvester and my accuracy at 100 yards with a proven load went to 9" for three shots So, for me, its NO wads under my sabot! Richard

I've tried veggie wads under the sabot in my .50 and still blown sabots with 250gr barnes and a mild 110 load (42 gr) that SW said shot fine for him. In fact if I remember right he was able to use up to 46gr of 110 without blowing sabots. Difference I think is he used a WW, not veggie. I think it probably does a better job at protecting the sabot base as it can more easily conform to it. I think. Haven't tried any yet, and since finding the thors shoot so good, no real reason too.

Richard Just a question, since I have used veggie wads for at least 8 years without poor accuracy, how do you know that it was the veggie wad and not something else? I am not sure exactly how many sub moa 5 shot groups you have shot, but I know that you did shoot one WITH the veggie wads... edge.

Edge.........you may be right (with statistics)! All I know is the other day that veggie was the only thing I changed (and I did it on purpose just to see what would happen) and it really killed the group Richard

I wonder if a 1/8" hard card wad would do any better?

I was using felt wads under the blue harvesters and they seemed to work well for some pretty warm loads, never blew a sabot and accuracy was good but just one more thing to stuff down the tube so I quit using them...Bill

I agree 100% with hillbill, if there is no perceived benefit don't bother. On the other hand if you blow sabots or you have plastic buildup, then you might give an over powder wad a try.
