This is embarrassing for me. My .243 barrel looked short to me so I decided to just measure it. I put the tape to it and sure enough the bore was only about 18 inches. I started researching and discovered that barrels are measured from the base of the cartridge to the muzzle. I didn't know they included the chamber and discovering this made me feel......well, like I have a lot yet to learn. I wonder how many knew the advertised length included the chamber? Which is longer a 24 Inch 30-06 or a .308 24 Inch barrel? It just doesn't seem right that the 30-06 barrel is longer. Live and learn.

Actually I would think you get more barrel with a 24 inch .308 because the barrel is still 24 inches and the .308 is about an inch shorter. My 24 inch .300 win mag does pretty good.

The 24" '06 bore length is shorter than the .308 Win. The .308Win overall length will be shorter due to the use of a shorter action length. To the best of my knowledge all rifle barrel lengths include the chambers. So do pistols ,but revolvers do not because of the cylinder.

Ozark, if you knew it all, you (we) wouldn't be talking about it. Everyone learns something every now and then. A shorter barrel is stiffer, many times they are more accurate, and easier to manuever. We shoot Encore pistols with 15in barrels and a carbine with 17.5in and they are all very accurate. I had a 16.5" M77 Ruger compact that shot 2" groups at 200 yds out of the box. You don't give up much velocity with an efficient caliber anyways. Jay

I got into it with a game warden once because he said the barrel on my pistol wasn't long enough to be legal,,,,, and if you messured from the front of a loaded round it was not,,,, but from the back of the chamber it was,,,,,, things were getting pretty heated when another GW showed up and sided with me,,,,, problem was I was dragging out a deer I'd busted with the 10mm Glock and a aftermarket barrel that stuck out the slide over an inch
