Well thanks to richard I got my feet wet in shooting 1000 and 600 yds.I didn't do great but for me it was great.Next year I will get to shoot the custom richard built for me and see if I can get a good group. If I can get at least one group at 1/2 moa I will be tickled pink.Sure wished I could have gotten into this 60 yrs ago.May have been able to give richard a run for the money by now,he is in a class way above my head. If you think I am bragging you are right at my age and can hit the paper at 1000 yds its worth braggin about. Went to my first 1000 yd match ( If it hadn't been for richard I or my buddie bill would have never gotten there)This has opened up a whole new adventure in shooting for me and love it.If I never shoot another good group I am satisfied I did do fairly well so far.Am not compareing myself to the good shooters only myself to myself. The good shooters are on the top and I am on the bottom or below. The first shoot I got to use my first custom bench rifle built by one of the top builders,I lucked out and shot a 46 out of 50 score and won the relay with score and was an 11 in group. Was so excited I for got to get the target to show. Whats this got to do with a savage? well I got a 6.5 x 284 from richard built on a savage long action with hart barrel and a dura max hunting stock went to the next 1000 yd shoot and shot pretty good with it. They had 2 shoots that day and since I wasn't trying to beat anyone (which I knew I couldn't ) I tried 2 different bullets and loads in each shoot to see how they would do. The first group went a little over 10 inches, you can see the excat on the targets, the second group was in the rain but turned out to be the best.Don't think I did too bad compared to the high dollar bench rifles. The best group at 600 yds was 3.5 in.Was useing a savage action with shelin barrel and laminated hunting stock. In 260 caliber. Had a great expierance and can't wait till the shoots start again next year. Will still be in the bottom scoring but will have as much fun as anyone there. Thanks Richard.

Welcome to the club. I am still shooting steel in the prone, but there is little to compare to the feeling of hearing" BANG.........................................(wait for it).....................................................................ding"

Herman........thank you for the compliments! Actually I am happy to have found you (thru the Savage ML forum) and subsequently your friend (now mine also) Bill. (While you went to hunting camp, Bill and I went to the gun show in Hickory). Herman and Bill have become my best two shootin' buddies. Every Tuesday, without fail we are at our range burning powder. Actually, Bill and Herman were two frustrated long range shooters just waiting for some one like me to come along and get them started! ;D And cause them to spend $$$$ ;D I, on the other hand, have to thank Herman for the immense amount of help he gave me in getting started with the Savage ML. Like both disciplines, it makes it so much easier when you have someone helping you that has an idea of whats going on. So, in effect, we complimented each other. This coming year I can see all three of us doing quite a bit of competitive shooting. We will all be shooting the 6mmBRX for the 600 yard competition. The 1,000 yard range which was only 50 minutes away, unfortunately experienced some problems with the land owner. The club is now shooting some 3 1/2 hours away in Butner NC. So, I have a feeling the travel distance will curtail our 1.000 yd. matches. The land owner will still be holding matches, but not registered IBS shoots. Strictly money matches. We may still shoot there? Richard

Congrats Herman, you have my envy. I have long wished with a burning desire to start competing at 600 and 1000yrds just to see what i can do and to give me a reason to buy yet another rifle and shoot more often.
Once this recession things works itself out and I don't have to worry about money so much, I promised myself to get me a rifle that could do double duty as a hunting and competing firearm.
I have had some quite encouraging results at 500yrds and less with my plane Jane 338wm and a 4-12x40mm VariX-II, so I would really like to see what i could do with a scope designed for use at shooting long range.
It seems that shooting at longer range is becoming more popular so there are more long range scopes to chose from now than ever before, so thats good news.

Congrats Herman I know you are having a good time. Believe it or not I shot at Camp Butner years ago. I think it was in 85. It was the North Carolina long range championship I do believe. I shot service rifle, (m14) 308, iron sights. I remember it because it was my first 1000 yd experience and it sure was a long day. I left with my tail between my legs. That bull looked like a BB on top of a railroad track through my iron sights. I did poorly that day, but did learn alot. Man that was a long time ago..

1000 yards with iron sights is an experience. I have been there with the M1. I didn't do worth a hoot the first trip. Took most of my alloted cartridges to catch up with the wind and get on paper. The mirage can play a lot of tricks at that distance. Congratulations Herman.

Thanks fellows. If I had to use open sights I probably couldn't hit anything at 100 yds. Sat (jan 2nd ) starts the new year at the 600 yd range with a club fun shoot, hopeing the weather holds up so we can make it. I can try out my new rifle that richard built (all 3 of us can try out our new ones) As you all know I love to shoot,I don't try to shoot really to beat anyone just to have a good time.If I can luck out and get at least one small group at 600 or 1000 yds during the year I will be king of the hill.I think my biggest thrill is meeting and watching some of the top shooters shoot, and another is looking at all the differant rifles (heavy and light) that show up for the shoots.Man you can spend 1/2 the day just looking at differant rifles. All the ones I have met at the ranges are fellows like you and I they don't have any big head I can out shoot you.You ask any one a question and they are like here on this board willing to help.Great bunch of guys and gals.Yes women too and they all beat me at shooting.

Update: I just got my copy of Precision shooting (Dec) and just had to post this. I had made the statement in one of the above posts that is I just got ONE group at 1/2 MOA I would be tickled to death. Well the last shoot this year I did better than that I had a match group (20 shots) that measured Avg. 2.3798and came in 4th in group. My score wasn't that impressive but I'm working on that for next year. The 1st place is Sam Hall he holds all kind of records.I think it was the month before or one before that, that he broke a record with a .386 in.Now this guy can shoot and a way out of my league. For a guy my age I think I lucked out and done good. I owe it mostly to Richard because he built the rifle and without his help I would be lost. For the fellows and ladies that have never tried shooting the 600 yd and have a chance jump at it. If you don't have a bench rifle use your best hunting rifle.I don't have a heavy bench rifle so what I do is take one of my hunting rifles and try them out at 600 yds. This last match I took my 260 and it averaged right at 5 in. Richard,Bill and myself are waiting patiently for the 2011 matches to start. Everyone have a great Christmas and New Years.

I so wish I had a place to shoot 1000 yards or even 600 often enough to get good at it. I have a 200 yard range and frakly it has become routine. Nothing even remotely difficult about it. Made the longest shot I have ever made on a deer this year, in the woods 240 yards, and all be it challenging to shoot between tree branches and cane, shot placement was simple. I believe I have outgrown my range. I started shooting .22lr at 100 and 200 but I am shooting 1 hole groups with that as well. Such is life, always wanting more. I am not bragging just envious.
