Just curiouse !
Was wondering if there are any other Sika deer hunters lurking here abouts ?
I hunt the Blackwater in Maryland each year for the little guys and put in for the draw at Chincoteague here in Virginia each year !

No, but I would sure like to hunt them and every year my interest keeps peaking. Heard some areas only allow bows and crossbows...sure would like an op to take one with an inline. In fact would like to plan a hunt down there this coming year. Tell me (us) more! Have a great day! Dave

OOOOOhhh YEAH! They are my favorite deer to eat. Always hunted on Assateague (next to town of Chincoteague) NWR. Was raised in the Northampton Co., next county down from Accomac. If we don't draw a hunt we go and try for the standby draw. Have killed quite a few and always enjoy the hunt. Of course we just use shotguns. Used to use #4 buck but now 00 buck is smallest shot allowed. Mostly hunt like rabbit hunting. Line up and walk along and kick the bush. Best 1 day hunt: we were resting next to one of the sloughs and the guys in the adjacent hunt area jumped a herd and they came down the edge of the marsh in single file. 4 of us slammed all 8 deer in one volley. On the way out 2 of the guys spotted 3 more standing in the marsh and put the sneak on them too. We ended up tying all 11 deer together and floating them down one of the canals till we were closer to the road. There had been a lot of rain and the water was high inside the refuge. What kind of hunting have you had for Sika? OOOOOOOOOhhhh YEAH they are goooood to eat.

They have a handicapped area that I am sure you can get a spot in relatively easy ! The permit is like $25 . Non res license however will cost you about $140 in Virginia unless we have a special deal of some type for disabled veterans !

What kind of hunting have you had for Sika? I started hunting Chincoteague in 1991 and have put in for the draw every year since although I get drawn maybe 33% of the time and have done standby once ! Haven't killed but a couple on Chincoteague ! Back about 1996 I started hunting on a lease in Dorchester County Maryland and hunted it for about 4 years until we lost our lease because the Blackwater NWR purchased the land ! Now I hunt the Blackwater each year for the ML and shotgun seasons ! I've taken a few hinds , a couple spikes and a pair of 6 pointers . My first 6 pointer was in 1999 on one of our leases , my second 6 pointer was in 2005 on the Blackwater ! I just hunted this past friday on the Blackwater and took and nice sized hind at about 65 yards with my Savage 10ML-II shooting the Hornady 250SST with 42 grains of VV N-110 and a CCI209M . Here are some pics the sunday before when I went in to hang my stand !

Now here are pics from friday ! I was maybe 1/3 of a mile down a fire road and then about 300 yards out into the marsh from the fire road ! I killed the deer a couple minutes before 9AM and I got me , the deer , my treestand , ML and other gear out to the truck at 11:10AM ! I was beat when I came out but I cannot wait until the monday after Thanksgiving to go back down for the first day of gun season on the refuge ! Also have permits for an additional day in the late ML season and 3 more days in the gun season ! Also have a permit for january 7 and 8 on Chincoteague in area 1 !

Maybe they can turn you on to someone who handles gun and ML hunts !

You know I have killed about 200 whitetails in my lifetime !
And if someone could hook me up with a place that had a relatively good chance of killing a nice 6 point Sika every year and maybe a hind or two I would give up whitetails cold turkey !
Now before anyone gets irritated over my comment , I like taking whitetails as much as the next guy ! However I have killed enough of those for a lifetime already ! The Sika however is just a whole different ballgame to me !
And I'll tell you this the first time you go you'll either love it or hate it ! There usually is no in between with a persons feelings towards hunting these guys !
I've killed them with a bow , rifle , ML and shotgun ! And enjoyed every last one I have ever taken !
Oh yeah I give whitetail venison away every year . I rarely ever give more then a steak or two away from any Sika I take ! The meat is excellent , to me it's pretty much like elk !

Here are my two 6 pointers ! This one was killed in 1999 during the Maryland early ML season on our private lease that is now owned by the Maryland DNR . Shot him at 15 yards ! Killed him with my Knight 50 cal Disc Rifle loaded with a Nosler 44-250 Partition bullet in a Knight green sabot with 110 grains of Black Canyon (no longer available) and a CCI209 ! He dropped at the shot ! This is my larger 6 pointer ! Killed him the first day of the shotgun season on the Blackwater NWR in 2005 ! Shot him at about 45 yards with a Savage 210F 12 gauge bolt action rifled barrel slug gun with a Leupold 3-9 on top and loaded with Winchester 2 3/4" Partition Gold slug !He ran maybe 40 yards past me towards the truck

I'm pulling outta here at about 1 AM monday morning (11/30/09) for the 4 hour drive to the Blackwater NWR for the first day of the gun season !
Check in is at 5AM ! Then I need to drive maybe a mile from the check in place , park my truck get my treestand and rest of my junk about 100-150 yards to my "pre-picked" spot and get settled in by 6AM since legal shooting time is about 6:30AM !
Gonna take the NEW Savage 220F as my primary weapon this year . For those unfamiliar with the gun it's Savage's new 20 gauge bolt action rifled slug gun . I have a older LEupold Vari XII 3-9 on top and have it sighted in dead on at 100 yards with the Remington AccuTip slugs . They shoot minute of angle from the bench in this gun I might add !
My spot for monday's hunt is good for both Sika and WT ! So I have a 4 deer "possibility" for the day ! Can take a Sika stag and hind as well as two WT's of which onlu one can be a buck or two slicks .
I'd be happy with anything but a 6 point Sika Stag would just about make my YEAR !
Pictures will follow regardless of the outcome !

Well I sat in my stand 11/30/09 for 10 HOURS before I saw the first deer ! And I'm sorry to say it wasn't a Sika deer . It was three antlerless whitetails so I popped one of them at 120 yards with the Savage 220F shooting the Remington 20 gauge 2 3/4" AccuTips . Thru both lungs and she went maybe 20 yards after the shot . Now a couple pics of the spot I was at this time ! Good bit clearer then where I ML hunted !
