Last Sat was our last day up here and I had yet to get a shot at a buck,,,,, I had 8 different cameras out at 6 different locations and all I was getting were middle of the night images of smallish bucks with only a couple of does moving in the days,,, Finally last Thursday a buck showed himself on my land following a doe at 7am and Friday they were back at 4am, checked this camera Friday night,, 1.5 year old deer with 8 inch spikes and small brow tines,,, looked great to finally see an image of one in color!
Sat Morning I was there on top of my fav rock cliff and waiting before light,,, right before light 2 deer came by close but all I could see were 2 deer shapes at 20 yards, one following the other, they came and went. I was more than bummed. At shooting light another deer came by from the same direction and I could clearly see the antlers without the scope,, It was the same spike and I shot him at 20 yards with the 7mm-08 and 120 BT, deer went 20 feet and fell over, in one side and out the other behind the shoulders lungs mush and top of the heart gone... at least I had some meat for the grill and pan, nice tender 1.5 year old... no meat left for Jerky or pressure canning but hey it happens on these lean years...
So I punch a tag, gut, drag to the house, call it in,,, skin and quarter, and put in the fridge. Late afternoon I get to thinking about all the coyotes I keep getting on camera and figured I would head up and call some in the same area,,, I get up there 30 mins before sunset with the .223, settle in the same rock cliff and wait a few minutes to call.
I no sooner set down and get comfy when I hear something coming around the Mnt below the rock cliff,,, I look down and there is a nice 6 point following a doe,,, he looks like a 2.5 year old deer, chest is as big as or bigger than his hams and he has a nice thick neck,,, I think about it but decide that I will let him go,,, no sooner are they out of sight at a fast trot when a mature 7 point, nose to the ground trailing like a bloodhound, comes in on the same trail,,,, he looks alot like the 6 point but seems heavier and has thicker antlers,,, I decide to fill tag number 2,,,
At 30 yards I Grunt at him and he stops, 65 grain sierra BTSP pushed by a stout load of varget entered tight behind the shoulder halfway up and exited low behind the shoulder other side, lungs were mush and the deer ran 40 yards hunched up and fell over. Now I have Jerky and pressure can meat as well,,, never got 2 in one day before,, last day of the season even.
