-10* F Wind: 0-5 Savage T/A .451 30" 327 Match Hunter IMR4831 CCI-M 209 primer .041" Tungsten bushing 15/64" PFC Newly installed Harrel brake OK, now that we have a fairly cold morning with no wind it's decent enough to go shoot and test powder ignition with the .041" bushing and very slow powders in the .451 I left the loaded guns outside for 2 hours in the -10*F. The primers were also left outside. My normal velocity with this load is ~ 3040 The velocity today, after the gun was outside for 2 hours was 3007 fps, with the Magnetospeed V3. I then shot one bullet into the 100 yard target to verify accuracy without the V3 on the barrel. Then I shot a 3 shot group at 500 yards. So the only cold bore shot in this group was the very first shot with a velocity drop of 33 fps over my shooting which goes back into the late summer and early fall. It seems that IMR4831 is a fairly temp stable powder in the .45's. I'll need more testing to prove it, but the way this winter has started out -30 to -40 isn't too far off. I also wanted to test the accuracy of the barrel with a new brake that I had installed. All I wanted was for the accuracy to stay the same, since it shot very well without a brake. And the accuracy has stayed the same. 1/2 to 3/4 MOA @ 500. The recoil reduction is unbelievable! I can literally keep the gun on target at 500 yards when I shoot now! A big Thank You to M. for helping me out with my guns and shooting technique!

15/32" pfc?
Great shooting. I'd bet the enlarged bushing is helping with ignition and temp stability.

I corrected the PFC size rangeball. Thanks It is a 15/64" PFC, the biggest I have, and I only use it on this load. I use 7/32" (14/64") on all my others. The bigger bushing has to help, I would think. Considering the amount of flame the .040" lets into the powder chamber is 2 times as much as the .030" let's in.

Earnhardt,
Excellent shooting, 1/2 moa @ 500 is a tough achievement for any rifle....good equipment and good trigger puller!

Outstanding, Josh. What charge did you use? I was told all my bullet making stuff should be shipping soon and I'm trying to get a range of data to work with as I start the R&D. If you don't want to post it but will share it just shoot it to me in a PM.

That is just flat out great shooting. What kind of loading pressure are you using? I like that powder too but I've had some poofs with light loading pressure so I've been testing duplexes with N110 booster of 10 grains. Does that gun have a powder chamber? I'm working on a theory that although a powder chamber has some positives, it may be harder to properly ignite or get the pressure up.

7mmfreak, I'm really looking forward to giving your new bullets a try! PM sent.
cowhunter, no powder chamber in the barrel, 1-2 hands of bullet loading pressure. No booster.
airborneike and Richard...Thanks!

Excellent long range shooting. Even in a centerfire I thought there would be more drop off in speed in the cold than that. To cowhunter: I think ET might agree with you on the powder chamber theory.

great shooting & info~ any plans to double the distance for some paper fun? Thanks! Ya I do plan on shooting at longer range. I wanted to try it this weekend, but they moved their deer blinds to the area where we used to shoot long range. That field was the easiest to set up on for shooting, but he has some other fields that are 1/2 to 1 mile long, that I could try out. At the latest, it will be January before I get over there to shoot long range.

Earnhardt: I do not know why I thought you lived in NC, I checked and see it is MN. You will be able to check for some cold temperature ignition for sure. Stay warm.

15/32" pfc? Great shooting. I'd bet the enlarged bushing is helping with ignition and temp stability. He has a Savage plug with a .300" flame channel, figure that one out. Great shooting Josh!

What Fishhawk meant was that the width of one of my Primer Flame Channels was .300", not the length. The PFC was EDMed to that size. But I haven't used that plug yet. The width of the PFC on this plug is 15/64" or .234"
