A friend of mine wants one to hunt with a few days a year at closer range and to shoot enough to be proficient, not looking for fancy or expensive just a good "starter model inline,, any suggestions?

Most any of the new MLs will give minute of deer at 100 yds and less. Used models are really pretty easy to find and offer good value if you know what to check out. with your experience you should be able to select a good used gun. Personally I would suggest something along the lines of a Black Diamond or a TC system 1. If you want a top of the line smoker look at finding a good White or a Knight but they can be pricey. they are slamfires but what the hey, for the 3 days a year special ML season hunter they can't be beat. I shot a TC Firehawk and my sidehammer smokers until I got my MLII. My brother still hunts with a Huntsman, it's H&R I think, and it is a deer killin machine. A post over on the buyin/sell/trade board might even get you some bites. I'm sure there a bunch of guys here with good smokers sitting unused. 10 ga

She is a friends wife and already hunts with a break action rifle so that would be a good choice for her, loads will be moderate and while she likes to shoot we have a 2 week ML season and that's probably the only time she will use it.

They already have an Apex rifle so that may be a good way for them to go as well, anybody have an apex ML barrel? CVA has a .45 and a .50 listed

But didn't u say?? I'm personally all worn out on the pervasive break-action hinge-pin hammer gun version of ugly. There seems to have been some sort of unofficial competition in the muzzleloading market as to who can sell the ugliest front-loader with the nastiest tupperware stock, the noisiest cocking, and the slowest lock time Which is it Randy???

Which is what, exactly?
It is no secret that entry-level product does big numbers, from the Savage Edge / Axis, Ruger American, and so it goes. Not just rifles, but shotguns as well: Mossberg 500 / Remington 870 Express. Many people shop the firearm itself to death, not thinking that the cost of the gun is trivia, compared to overall costs of ownership. For an active hunter, hunting more than one state . . . good grief: ammo, transportation, taxidermy costs . . . the cost of the gun itself is a very, very small part of the whole package.
I don't like matte finishes, tupperware stocks, etc. on much of anything. It is undeniable that many, MANY people buy them. Most people buy them. They all cost the same to feed, your scopes cost the same, your hunting tags and travel costs don't change.
