Others have had more success with restaining the laminates than I. I did that twice, once on a Ruger 22 stock and the results were a bit spotchy. Maybe I should have used a stain conditioner on the wood first, I tend to think that stock was birch wood. I also did a centerfire stock. It did better but I could not quite get all the old color out it seemed.

A thing to remember when re-finishing wood... The old finish must be 100% removed... Once you start sanding, the clear coat kinda blends in with the wood and its hard to see, so good vision is required.. Also remember the finish was applied wet and it soaks into the wood grain so when sanding it off you must also sand away some wood changing the original dimensions of the stock..
The best thing to do if your plan is to finish your stock yourself and you're ordering it new from Boyd's is to pay them the extra $10.00 for not adding a finish and save yourself a ton of work and $20.00 worth of sand paper..
I know it sucks to pay more for less but custom orders change the standard process and therefor adds cost to the job, even though we would think its easier for them not to apply the finish it actually adds an additional step in their process, but well worth $10.00 to the guy that has to strip the finish back off..

Having to remove the paint identified blemishes sort of like bondo in a vehicle restoration. When you sand it all down the low spots have color still in them and you can fill them with an appropriate filler. That was an advantage for me, plus I'm not charging myself for my time.

I don't have the skillset you guys have, nor the patience. That's why I ordered my tacticool finished in the color I wanted and with a better recoil pad.. it only took 2 weeks to receive my custom ordered tacticool from boyds, so it was worth it to me.. I have to admire what you've done with yours, for if I tried that, I'd likely be burning mine in the fireplace as we speak..

anyone that orders or has a boyds stock or any wood stock for that matter needs to realize the barrel channel/ trigger recess needs to get sealed. I have done many and about all they get is overspray on the verticals and when it gets wet you are asking for trouble, just a heads up..

Bill, does that include laminates?

Bill,
True statement. I sealed the trigger-guard in-letting when I bedded it. I also painted the trigger cutout brown to match the bedding. I also touched up where I cut out the trigger pin recesses in the bedding so everything was properly sealed. It is the same thing with the magazine cutout on the few I have seen; just over-spray.

I realized today I hadn't posted any targets yet from the Green Beanie. These were shot with the Bushnell HDMR : Try as I may it won't shoot a 250BE but it loves the 300MH: I have 5 of the 275BE and a fistful of 327MH but they are in reserve to test in a new Brux barrel to baseline it for bullet development.

Love the 300 mh group! What velocity are they running? Have you seen a velocity that send to perform the best?

Why the additional 5 grains of the 4198 with the 250's??. Also are you sizing those?

I know it's in the thread somewhere but what twist is it again? My 1:18 pacnor hates the BE's as well.
Found it 1:24 , don't know why yours is hating the BE's.

That's cool. I lose interest in posts when guys call McMillan stocks a "Mickey", Remingtons a "Remmy", or a Leupold a "Lupy". Everybody has a pet peeve. The Christian Outreach board is higher up on the main page.

River Rat,
I don't know the MV on these. The weather has been too windy and wet to play with the chrono for the last month. I will try to get you some numbers when the weather clears up. Today was too sunny, go figure.
Rambler,
I shot 55gn of IMR 4198 because I already knew they were mediocre at 50gn and I wanted to bump up recoil a little for testing the HDMR. Yes, these are sized. The barrel on this gun is a .442/.451 pistol bore so any Parker bullet must be Full Formed to work in this gun. I have never shot a smooth formed bullet. That will be a new adventure for me with the .450/.458 Brux barrel.
Cole,
Yes, it is a 1-24" twist and I don't know why it doesn't like the BE but it doesn't at any charge I have tried and with or without wads.

looks like its a shooter. so far all the pistol size bores I have done were pretty accurate but they have all been faster twist. 1-16 and 1-18 with the 18 twist shooting 275-327 equally well, the 16 likes the 327s better..

Looks good to me.
Give H322 a try as a main with the 250's. 56-59gr with the 10gr booster. I know they shoot good with that charge in a 1:22 twist smooth sized. Well good with SR4759 as the booste . Thats a Dave W recommended load.

Looks like you "done" real good on that project! I am pretty sure that new Brux barrel is going to be sitting in one of them Tacticool stocks also! Richard

Omega,
I have some H322 I bought since there were several submissions for it when I did the Load Data Base-Line post for my testing. I will use both H322 and H4198 when I test the new bullets since guys seem to use both in even measure according to my poll. I personally don't have any interest in a bullet under 300gn but the 250BE and 275BE/MH are much more comfortable from the 6lbs NULA than 300+ gn bullets although my gun will stack 300MH on top of each other at about 2200fps with reasonable recoil. I'm just trying to shoot them up where I can so I burned up a half-dozen 250s today to give that optic a punch in the mouth.

Nice work, all the way around! Thanks for sharing the whole process with us from start to finish. Great job! I love the Tacticool stocks as is, I bet yours is really nice.. When it's said and done I will have 3 guns mounted in that stock.

Thanks, Guy. I've only got two (one on the Green Beanie and one on a rimfire trainer) but I think they are the best buy out there in a stock.

Love the 300 mh group! What velocity are they running? Have you seen a velocity that send to perform the best? The weather here is still too cloudy for the chronograph to get good readings or any reading at all. I need to buy a Magneto-Speed before I start testing my bullets. I shot the 300MH at 300yds today using the short range zero, measured drop to within 1/16", and used a ballistic solver to do the backwards math. If the BC that Parker posts on his sight is actually correct then my MV for the 300MH, when shooting a 10/50 duplex of N110/IMR4198, is approximately 2335 fps.

The Magnetospeed is nice, since the sun never seems to shine here either. How it effects grouping is a pain in the butt though.

The cool thing to will be if you had both Magneto speed and sky screen you could figure out accurate BC values.
