I'm having my Rem 700ML barreled by Pac- Nor with a 40 cal with a Savage breach plug for smokeless powder. My original barrel was 22". Is this long enough for a 40 cal smokeless? I really like the manuverability and balance of this length but would get it longer if I really need to.

I have a 21 inch in 45 cal and it works great for me, I am limited in speed though, I can't shoot as much powder as some of the other guys with the 26 inch barrels

I have the .40 cal 26" in my ML10 and I love it. A 22" one might be good if you plan to haul it around in the woods a lot, but otherwise I would recommend a longer one. I use mine almost exclusively from a stand and wouldn't change anything. The 26" to me is just the right balance between good long range performance and good handling characteristics.
A 24 - 26" one would be more able to use the great loads that the 40 offers. Mine will easily produce velocities of 2750' with a 200gr bullet and the 2200' to 2300' loads feel very mild. If you don't mind being just a bit "limited in speed" then it is probably fine.

I'm not trying to be silly I remember when I was told it was a 22" barrel and the customer had measured the inside of the barrel from muzzle to breech plug. You have to measure the outside of the barrel.

My barrel measures 22.25 inches from the receiver, the total length is 24".

I am hoping that a 22 inch barrel will work for you, I have one in a 38 caliber. It is what I now have so I will have to work with it. You have a choice but you can get what you want. Other than the expense, if you got it longer and did not like it you could cut off the extra length and then recrown it.

I believe that you will need to shoot slightly faster powder loads than what we are shooting with the 25-26-28" barrels but it should do very well. I do not feel you are handi-capped much at all. Your velocities will likely be 100-150'/sec slower at the same pressures. You'll have to settle for likely not over 2850'/sec.

Thanks for the input, I'm going to call and see if it's not to late to change it to 24"
