Hey guys new here. I used a friends savage to kill a deer this year and decided I need a smokeless muzzle loader. I was looking to convert a h&r ultra hunter 45-70. Just wondering if this is a good build and if SMI was the place to get my b/p? How do they shoot and would I be better off too just buy an SMI .45 barrel? Is one stronger/ safer then the the other? Thanks ahead of time for your help.

There are some here who have done that conversion and by most accounts they seem to shoot great. kiddynomite posted up some great groups with his. What you might find is some H&R bores are looser than others. The tighter the better it seems. To get an idea of yours before you commit, you can shove a saboted .40 barrel through it and gauge load resistance. If it's pretty easy to push through you may have to play with knurling to get the best accuracy, if it's medium or above, it will probably shoot great with proven loads from here. Good luck

+1 rangeball. And if it does prove to be a loose bore you have the option of going to a .410" 210gr Hornady XTP.

Hello yoder309, welcome to Doug's. This is a great place to learn the ropes of smokeless muzzleloading. I have sent you a couple PM's.
Hey guys thank you very much for the recommendations on my work, I truly appreciate it.
GOOD SHOOTING! Slufoot

Thanks guys. I think I am going to go ahead with the conversion. Is the SMI breach plug the best option? And I couldnt look at the link you posted slufoot. not sure why. said it was broken.

Link worked that time Slufoot thanx. nice looking gun. I just found out today that the ultra hunter I was going to use is not available after ... long story..... so I think I am going to just have SMI build me a .45 douglass barrel to fit a shot gun action that I have instead. The only thing I was concerned about was the rate of twist on the barrel. They said it is 28 in long with 1/28 twist. Does anyone have any input on these barrels and rate of twist. I have a 450 bushmaster with a 1/24 twist and it shoots sub moa. Just wondering if 1/28 is to slow?

Anybody know the weight of the H&R, with a 24" SMI barrel on it?

If you shoot the 200gr sst or the 195 barnes you should be fine.
